– Why G1?
“Our department was very fortunate to receive a FIRE Act Grant to replace 37 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units, including spare bottles and facepieces. Many of our members had prior experience with several types of SCBA, resulting in a variety of opinions on preferred equipment.
To ensure an objective and informed selection, I established an SCBA Committee composed of both officers and firefighters who routinely use SCBA in operations. The committee was given full latitude to evaluate any and all SCBA systems available on the market.
Throughout the process, the committee invited industry experts—both in sales and operational use—to present their specific SCBA systems. These sessions were open to all department members, allowing anyone to attend, ask questions, and handle each brand firsthand.
After careful evaluation, the committee narrowed the field to two manufacturers. Demo units were provided for field testing, including live burn exercises to assess performance under realistic conditions.
Following the evaluations, the SCBA Committee presented its recommendation to the Fire Chief and the department, selecting the MSA G1 as the preferred unit. The Fire Chief then met with Seth Newton of Newton’s Fire & Safety to finalize the purchase of all 37 SCBA units.”
