*Feeding Milestones 6-12 months*

1. Starts to show interest in solid foods
2. Begins to mouth and taste solid foods
3. Learns to sit independently, which allows for self feeding with supervision
4. Develops pincer grasp, enabling picking up small food items like Cherrios or small pieces of fruit
5. May begin to experiment with self-feeding using fingers and hands
6. Increase intake of solid foods while still relying primarily on breast milk or formula for nutrition

*If your child continues to gag longer than a year of age, a feeding consult may be indicated*
*I recommend waiting to start solid foods until your child is able to independently sit up by themselves to reduce the risk of choking*

Get ready for weekly educational feeding and lactation content ‼️⬇️

*Feeding Milestones Birth to 6 months*

1. Displays rooting reflex
2. Suckles and demonstrates a strong sucking reflex
3. Begins to coordinate suck-swallow-breathe pattern
4. Can latch onto breast or bottle and suck effectively
5. Shows hunger cues such as rooting, sucking on hands, or licking lips.
6. Typically consumes breast milk or formula exclusively; with introduction of solids around 6 months (or when showing interest with good core stability)

*Babies that are tongue tied typically demonstrate weak sucking skills and a disorganized suck-swallow-breathe pattern because they have a hard time managing the flow of milk. If your baby has a hard time sucking at the breast, bottle or on a pacifier an evaluation may be indicated! Follow along for my next post on 6-12 months! 💚

Hello, let me introduce myself!! My name is Jessica Starr and I am the founder of Feeding Foundations. I attended Clarion University of PA for a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders/Audiology and a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I also have a minor in Social Work. I specialize in the areas of pediatric feeding, dysphagia, endoscopy, and I’m also a certified breastfeeding counselor (CBC). I have experience in a variety of settings such as: skilled nursing facilities, outpatient, acute care, inpatient, NICU, early intervention and home health. I found my passion for dysphagia, tethered oral tissues (TOTs), and feeding early in my career. I became more interested in these areas after having children, as I experienced many feeding difficulties with my own two children. I am a passionate advocate for moms and babies and I would love to work with you and your child. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, fitness and spending time with my husband and two children. Stay tuned for weekly posts on all things pediatric feeding and lactation support!
