Praying for the Grapevine Police Department & all the family and friends of Officer Richard J. Hudson.
In Memory of Officer Richard J. “RJ” Hudson
Our department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of our own. On August 25, 2025, we said goodbye to Officer Richard J. “RJ” Hudson, who passed away following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
RJ began his distinguished law enforcement career in March 1995 with the Bedford Police Department and joined our agency on January 4, 2005. Over the course of his service, he became a pillar in our department and a beloved figure in our community.
For 18 years, RJ proudly served as a Motorcycle Officer in the Traffic Section, where his exceptional skills earned him recognition as an Expert Class rider and an award-winning officer. He was also a certified instructor for both motorcycle and ATV operations, dedicating himself to the training and safety of others.
RJ was not only known for his professionalism and dedication, but also for his relentless positivity and perseverance. In 2017, he survived a devastating on-duty crash that nearly claimed his life, breaking dozens of bones. Against all odds, he made a full recovery and returned to duty. This extraordinary comeback became a testament to his strength and determination. Rather than allow the experience to define him, RJ used it as a platform to inspire others, speaking often about resilience, mindset, and the power of never giving up.
In recognition of his bravery, RJ was awarded the Star of Texas Award in 2021 by Governor Greg Abbott. This prestigious honor is given to first responders who demonstrate extraordinary courage in the line of duty. Governor Abbott said it best: “To serve as a first responder is to answer the highest public calling… our first responders represent the very best of what it means to be a Texan.” RJ embodied that ideal every single day.
Beyond the badge, RJ was a devoted husband, father, brother, and son. His love for his family was unwavering and evident to all who knew him. That same love radiated outward. His warmth, generosity and steady presence touched countless lives, and the immense support shown to him during his illness reflected the deep connections he built throughout his life.
RJ also served in multiple other capacities throughout his career, including the Department’s Hiring Office, Criminal Investigations Division, and as a School Resource Officer. In every role, he led with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to service.
Chief Mike Hamlin shared the following:
“RJ was the embodiment of courage, compassion, and commitment. He led by example and inspired those around him both on and off duty. We are better as a department, and as people, for having served beside him. His legacy will not be forgotten.”
As a department, we mourn the loss of not just a colleague, but a true brother in blue. His absence leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts and in our ranks. His legacy of strength, service, and love will live on.
Service details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
Rest easy, RJ. We’ll take it from here.
