Nighttime Routine for Kids that will Save Your Sanity

Ever notice how your kids get a second-wind after trying to get them to wind-down? It’s their nervous system, not necessarily bad behavior. So, there’s another way to approach it that just might save your sanity!! Doing a few things in the right order can change everything for the better. Kids calm down at night differently than adults do. You probably love yawning, quieting down, and dimming the lights; your kids will greatly benefit from this, too, but not if you do them too soon! First things first for littles, and that’s to clear out the energy their bodies have stored up! Movement is actually THE BEST thing to do for them to help them relax for bed. That’s right…they need to run, jump, dance, wrestle and laugh! Try these steps and see if working with their nervous system makes a difference…
Step 1: Get the Energy Out (10-20 minutes)—encourage them to do the crazy active loud things that go against everything you’re thinking will help them relax for bed!!
Step 2: Bathtime & Dim Lights (10-15 minutes)—add Epsom salt to help them relax, give their bodies needed Magnesium for sleep and it even helps growing pains! Dim the Lights and slow things down. Blue Light from screens kills our natural melatonin, so no screens & dim lights.
Step 3: Create Connection (5-10 minutes)—Read a book, snuggles & pray with them or over them

Something I want for all of my patients is to be aware of simple things you can have on hand to help when something goes wrong with your health. Injuries are always inconvenient and never wanted, but alas they do occur from time to time, so let’s talk about something that can help you or your kiddos recover faster! Proteolytic Enzymes or Proteases are small proteins that help diminish inflammation and speed up the healing process. We always want healing to be maximized, which is why as long as a bone isn’t broken, if you have a fall or car accident or sprain/strain—get adjusted ASAP! SoftWave is our other go-to for soft tissue injury recovery as well. But taking enzymes right away after a fracture, sprain, strain, or fall can DRASTICALLY HELP if taken within the first 7-10 days of your injury!

Which enzymes: Pancreatic Enzymes like trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase; papain from green papaya fruit; and bromelain from pineapples.

Dosage: Bromelain 500mg 3x/day OR Papain 500mg 2x/day; 30 minutes before meals on empty stomach; they are safe overall with no known side-effects.

Precautions: DO NOT take with anticoagulants, active gastric or duodenal ulcers or if allergic to pineapple or papaya respectively.

In November, we spent some time at the Dead Sea! It’s a total wonder for multiple reasons. Not only is it the saltiest water in the Earth, it’s also the lowest elevation in the Earth. Did you know there are 90+ trace minerals present not only in the Dead Sea, but in all ocean water? That water is so useful for so many reasons, but it’s NOT for drinking because it’s way too high of a concentration for the human body to consume…
HOWEVER, when you use a really good, unrefined sea salt from the ocean or any sea for that matter – those critical trace minerals help our bodies absorb and maintain hydration much more effectively.
What is the difference between unrefined sea salt and processed table salt? The refining process removes most of those trace minerals we desperately need, leaving behind mostly sodium chloride alone. Unrefined salts actually keep those minerals intact, which contributes to better flavor and balance of those minerals God gave us in the seas.
Dr. Erica & I are constantly recommending 1 pinch of a really good, unrefined sea salt in your water each morning to give you those trace minerals each day. This is a very inexpensive way to keep your body healthy & functioning well!

5 Toxins to Avoid To Begin To Change Your Family's Health

1. Fluoride – watch for it in tap water, toothpaste & dental visits. Easy ways to fix? Filter it out of any water at home, fluoride-free toothpastes & just kindly ask the dental staff NOT to use fluoride with your family. Cavities are NOT caused by a deficiency in a know neurotoxin (fluoride).
2. Food Dyes – if it’s unnaturally bright, it’s not right. Horrific effects from behavior, concentration to gut health.
3. Artificial Sweeteners – Aspartame, Sucralose, Saccharin, Acesulfame; these are hidden at the bottom of most ingredient lists and incredibly detrimental to our brains.
4. Seed oils – Canola, Soybean, Corn, Cottonseed, Grapeseed, and Peanut oils are incredibly inflammatory
5. Processed Sugars – AVOID high fructose corn syrup; switch to maple syrup or date sugar, bake things at home, say NO to processed desserts (i.e. Little Debbie snacks). If you don’t have these things available, it’s amazing how those addictions begin to break. Balance your child’s blood sugar (and yours) and watch how behaviors calm and happiness takes over.

When is the last time that you just sat before the LORD in prayer and just gave Him all the burdens you’re carrying, decisions looming over you, or relationships that you know in your heart could be better?...and get this next part…When is the last time you did that, AND THEN WAITED FOR HIS ANSWER? If the answer isn’t, “This morning!” Then, I’d love to challenge you today to change that. Let me give you some scripture for reference. Yeshua (Jesus) Himself said, 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Then, there’s this really important warning from the Book of James (his real name is Ya'akov in Hebrew, he was Yeshua’s brother; so when King James commissioned the Bible to be translated into English, he promptly gave Ya'akov his own name, James. Yeshua wasn’t walking around in the 1st century calling his brother James is my point 😉 But, he warns us that “asking” doesn’t just give us license for selfish gain, it gives us invitation for God’s glory. Listen to what Ya'akov (James) warns us about in James 4:1-10:
"What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions[a] are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you."
It is always, always, always our best option to humble ourselves before God. I would submit to you that true humility means that we do what Yeshua (Jesus) instructed us to do, which is to ask Him, seek for Him, knock and expect that the door will be opened, because that's what He says! He holds the answers to the questions we have; He holds the healing from the hurts we've suffered; and He holds the solutions to the problems we face. Our assignment is to come to him with humble hearts, willing to hear what He has to say.

In 2021 a study was done on dental pain using Ibuprofen compared to using Ginger for pain control, and the results were awesome! 400mg Ginger was comparable to 400mg of Ibuprofen for pain relief, which is super-helpful to know because that gives us options for pain relief!
Pain relievers can be so detrimental to our health, and we need to be aware of these issues. Ibuprofen & other NSAIDs can cause GI issues, kidney problems, heart attacks and strokes. I’m also totally against using Tylenol because of it’s interference with Glutathione in the body, impairing our ability to detox. Tylenol is also responsible for nearly half of acute liver failures and approx. 20% of liver transplants in the US. Ginger can be a wonderful way to help our bodies deal with acute pain without toxicity. I love how God’s creation can provide for us what is needed. Other great benefits & reasons to have ginger on hand: managing blood sugar, helps with nausea and calms the stomach, and can even help lower LDL cholesterol because of its help with inflammation in the body. If you missed part 1, you can find it at askdrsharla.com—Let’s get to the proverbial meat & potatoes of strengthening your immunity. There are things you need to add & things you need to remove:
Add:
1) optimize your Vitamin D levels, getting sunshine on your skin daily is critical, if you cannot do that then supplementing Vitamin D3 is an option. My favorite is Innate Choice Organic D Sufficiency.
2) Heal your GUT: grass-fed bone broth, probiotic foods (like organic sauerkraut) or supplements to restore optimal good bacteria, ION Gut Support daily if you have gut issues whatsoever;
3) Plenty of Vitamin C (citrus fruits and cruciferous vegetables are great sources, Vitamin A (liver, cod liver oil, carrots sweet potatoes) I like a desiccated beef organ supplement called Organ+, Elderberry;
4) Cold Plunges or Cold Showers, just 1-3 minutes can give your immune system a boost;
5) Prioritize good, restful sleep

Remove:
1) Processed sugar (in drinks or foods), it’s the easiest & fasted way to tank your immunity;
2) Products made with processed grains & white flour;
3) Processed food in general, junk food, products that contain more than 3-4 ingredients especially ones you can’t pronounce; 4) Stress;
5) Antibiotics, they can significantly decrease your immunity over time
