Let’s talk GLP-1…No, NOT the drugs, the Real-Life Hormone that God Made Your Own Body to Produce. Like most healing processes in the human body, the body knows what to do, it just needs less interference from modern man-made life! We’ve all heard the term by now, and if you’re not on the drug, you certainly know someone who is! GLP-1 stands for “glucagon-like peptide-1,” which is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite in the body. That hormone is produced naturally in our intestines, especially that L-cells in our lower small intestine & colon (large intestine). The BIGGEST dietary drivers of your own GLP-1 are these: protein, fermentable fiber, healthy fats, slower glucose absorption (minimizing blood sugar spikes, we’ll elaborate on this in a bit), gut microbial health, and the timing of when you eat & order of foods you eat.

Here are 8 Keys to Help Your Own Body Maximize Your Own GLP-1 For Weight Loss…
and I happen to believe this is just a really super-healthy way to eat in general
for today’s fake-food-infested existence.
1. Prioritize Protein at Every Meal
• Eggs, Grassfed Beef, Lamb, Wild-Caught Fish (ones that have fins & scales), Sardines, Greek Yogurt, Legumes (lentils, all types of beans) if your body tolerates them well
• Aim for 30-40 grams of Protein at every meal, esp. breakfast!! This sets you up for better GLP-1 signaling for the entire day, i.e. better blood sugar control and appetite control
• Need some ideas?: see the end
2. Increase Fermentable Fiber and/or Resistant Starches
• Gut bacteria ferment certain types of fiber into short-chain fatty acids which STRONGLY support your body’s natural GLP-1 production
• Healthy Fiber: Chia seeds, Flax seeds, Oats (steel cut are best, NOT instant), Beans/Lentils (fyi, if you are a B blood-type, lentils may cause digestive disturbances), Onions, Garlic, Asparagus, Apples, Berries
• Resistant Starches: this phenomenon happens when you cook potatoes or rice, then cool them completely in the fridge, then re-heat in the oven or stove-top.

3. Feed Your Gut Microbiome (Probiotic rich foods + Polyphenol foods)
• Better microbiome = more GLP-1 production period.
• Probiotic-rich Foods: Kefir, Yogurt with live cultures, Sauerkraut (I’m always promoting making your own or HEB Organics has a good one in the produce section), Kimchi, Fermented Veggies
• Polyphenol Foods: High Quality EVOO (look for High-phenolic), berries, green tea (if tolerated), cocoa, pomegranates, herbs/spices, coffee (organic, mold-free)
4. Use Healthy Fats Strategically
• EVOO, Avocado, Olives, Nuts, Seeds, Fatty fish
• Omega 3’s are critical, and most Americans get Omega 6 20:1 compared to Omega 3, when we need to be getting a 1:1 ratio of Omega 3’s to Omega 6’s
• COMPLETELY AVOID: Industrial seeds oils (completely omega 6’s), Ultra-processed fats
• Stack Protein + Fiber + Fat to increase satiety, minimize glucose spikes, improve your own GLP-1 Signaling

5. Eat Foods in the BEST Order
• This reduces blood glucose spikes and increases GLP-1 Signaling
• Veggies/Fiber first
• Then Protein/Fat
• Starches/Carbs last
• Add Apple Cider Vinegar 10-15 minutes before meals, I like to put 1 tablespoon of ACV in 8 oz water while I’m cooking meals, then by the time you’re ready to eat, your body is already getting the benefits in preparation for the meal
6. Consider Time-Restricted Eating (Intermittent Fasting)
• Restrict your eating window to 8 hours, i.e. 10am-6pm or 8am-4pm as examples
• Fast for at least 12-16 hours, max 12 if you’re struggling with hormones or adrenal fatigue
• Avoid snacking
• 2-3 real meals instead of grazing
7. Exercise & timing of it in relation to eating
• Go For A Walk After Meals!!
• Lift Weights or use bands for resistance training, we NEED muscle and more of it as we age, but you’ve got to be intentional about it, otherwise you’re losing muscle by the day over 40
• Even a 10-minute walk after meals improves how your body handles glucose SO MUCH
• If you eat dessert, make taking a walk after the meal a non-negotiable
8. STOP the things that inhibit your own GLP-1 Production
• STOP Ultra-processed foods (the further they are from looking like their original version) i.e. fast food French fries vs. making your own baked potato at home, letting it sit in fridge overnight and then warming it in the oven the next day. 2 VERY different effects in the human body from a potato. Always go with whole foods when possible.
• STOP liquid sugar. You know what I mean…cokes, sweet tea, milkshakes, etc.
• STOP frequent snacking.
• STOP sleep deprivation. Your body has to rest, so turn off the TV and go to sleep.
• STOP disrupting your circadian rhythm with blue light in your eyes at night. Watch the sunset then turn off screens or block blue light from screens with proper glasses so that your body can produce melatonin
• STOP low-protein diets
• Deal with chronic stress. Pray, Seek Counselling, Walk with a friend who is positive and uplifting, Deep breathing, Meditate on Scripture that reminds you God is good & He’s never going to leave you nor forsake you for example

Some Great Meal Ideas:

• Protein Meals: Steak & Eggs, Greek Yogurt & Chia Seeds & Berries, Salmon & Avocado, Lamb Sausage & Sauteed veggies
• Increasing Fiber: Add 2-3 tablespoons of Chia Seeds or Flax Seeds to your food daily, include resistant starches several times per week, add veggies at lunch & dinner
• Stacking Protein + Fiber + Fat into 1 meal:
o Salmon + Roasted Sweet Potatoes + Olive oil
o Grassfed Steak + Avocado + Sautéed greens
o Greek yogurt + Chia Seeds + Walnuts
• Eating Order: try salad before carbs, protein before bread/rice, add ACV before all big meals, and always always always eat PLENTY of protein and/or fiber before anything sweet

Imagine living in Greece where your own backyard is home to multiple olive trees where you harvest yearly to produce your family’s own olive oil (this really happens!!). We can all imagine the ways we wish we lived more naturally or closer to the way God intended humans to eat…but we here we are, by providence or choice in North TX, so how do we do the BEST with what we have?We bring in those nutrients we need from either foods or supplements!!Here’s our all-time TOP 3:

Brain/Skin/Heart Health. Omega-3 fatty acid rich Fish Oil from super-clean sources & 3rd party tested (Innate Choice is our favorite). Most people DO NOT get nearly enough Omega 3, especially in comparison to Omega 6, so we need to supplement this one. Quality matters...it should NEVER taste or smell like fish, that means it's rancid.

Gut Health. All-time BEST way to help your gut is to make your own sauerkraut (All the pre- and pro-biotics we desperately need) -or- buy raw, organic at the store (HEB Organics is a good one, no other ingredients besides organic cabbage and salt). Not a sauerkraut lover?? Me either...so in this case, just take a really high-quality probiotic capsule (Innate Choice or Orthomolecular are our favorites, we have them at Clearview).

Cellular Health. Minerals regulate nearly every cellular process, including energy production, nerve signaling, hydration, hormone function, detoxification, and tissue repair. Use high-quality sea salt, add it to your food, put a pinch in your water, and take minerals like ION or BEAM to get the full amount you need daily. One of our eldest patients at Clearview (in her 90's!!) told me 2 weeks ago that BEAM Minerals have her feeling like "her old self again!" How cool is that?! Our bodies REQUIRE nutrients!!

Do You Know The Power Of Your Words?

The Bible teaches us SO much about this incredibly important subject.
Jesus (Yeshua) said this in Matthew 12: 33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

If we really understood the power of our words, and how accountable we will be for them when we stand before God one day—I think we’d be very careful to speak not only what is true, but also what is life-giving. Do your words often sound more like blessing or cursing? Life and death is in the power of the words we speak. Be careful how you speak, repent when you’ve spoken death and cursing, submit to God, resist the Devil and he will flee from you.

Don’t be an instrument of speaking evil any longer, be an instrument for blessing and life-giving words!!

If you feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit over words you’ve spoken directly to someone or about someone that were not true or associated with cursing that person, there is no better time than this moment to repent. Come clean before God, confess your sins to Him and ask the Lord Jesus to wash you clean and forgive you. Jesus (Yeshua) laid His own life down so that you might be completely free and made completely whole again, no longer a slave to evil but set apart to do His will, no longer your own. When we confess our sins, He is faithful & just to forgive us. If you have repented before God, make a point to ask forgiveness from anyone whom you’ve harmed with your words. Send the text, make the call, write the letter, whatever you need to do, come clean and make it right! Once you repent and turn away from speaking words of cursing and death, those are no longer ones the Jesus said you’ll have to answer for…once you’ve repented and renounced sin, it is separated from you as far as the East is from the West.
And as Jesus said, “Go and sin no more.”

Here is a brief list of Scriptures concerning the words we speak…meditate on these truths today:

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29

“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire.” – James 3:5-6

“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” – Proverbs 12:18

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” – Colossians 4:6

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” – Hebrews 3:13

Your Body Really FEELS How You Eat, Move & Think:

There are so few things in life more important than taking care of your physical body, your mind and your spirit. Your health is going to affect your life as much or more than anything else!! If you’ve ever been sick for an extended time, had a chronic diagnosis or had an injury that kept you down for a while – you KNOW this is true! Nothing becomes more important than regaining your health because your life is directly connected with it. Here are some “food for thought” considerations:
Are you eating foods that are feeding your cells?
Feeding your emotions?
Feeding your habits?
Feeding your taste buds?

Are you feeding your body other nutrients it needs?
Getting enough sunshine?
Getting enough sleep?
Getting enough shalom?

If you’re giving your body “garbage” to work with, it will still do amazing things for you for years…but there’s a limitation. You can have a longer, better life with MORE LIFE in your years IF you will start to give your body what it actually needs. Nutrient-dense food, good salt, good hydration, good sunshine, good sleep, good alignment, good relationships…particularly with the good Shepherd who loves you and gave His life for you.

There is no substitute for the shalom in your soul from a relationship where you’ve trusted your life to Yeshua (Jesus). Shalom is the Hebrew Word most of us have heard translated merely “Peace.”

And shalom IS peace, but it’s more: it’s wholeness, the state of lacking nothing, soundness, prosperity, friendship, health & safety.

My Grandpa: A Life Well-Lived for 98 Years

My Grandpa, Dr. Dave Mitchell, passed away last week at 98 years old. He is 100% the reason that I became a Chiropractor. I watched him from the time I was very little taking care of people, “fixing” people, helping people, serving people inside and outside of the four walls of his practice. I watched him adjust people on tailgates of trucks and bleachers at ballgames and haybales at rodeos. He spent almost 50 years in his practice, Mitchell Chiropractic Life Center in Alamogordo, NM (which still thrives today) and then Albuquerque, NM. After retiring from his regular practice he went on to serve Southern NM from Ruidoso to El Paso and every place in between adjusting race horses, jumping horses and rodeo performance horses and their owners! He was still giving adjustments up into his 90’s-he never stopped taking care of the people (and the animals). My Grandpa was an inspiration and mentor to so many Chiropractors over the years, teaching Thompson Technique seminars (this is the technique we use at Clearview utilizing the drop tables). He was in Davenport, Iowa at Palmer College of Chiropractic when Dr. Clay Thompson was developing the technique and tables that we use today.
I am the 11th out of 12 Chiropractors in my family now, and my Grandpa has played a HUGE role in what we do and how we serve you here at Clearview. Dr. Corey & Dr. Erica are starting that same trend in their family, too! By the end of 2027, there will be 5 Chiropractors in their family! It is my great honor and joy to share a little bit of Dr. Mitchell’s legacy with you; 20 years of Clearview Chiropractic Life Center stands upon the solid foundation he laid back in 1956 at Mitchell Chiropractic Life Center in New Mexico.

No words can express what he meant to me, and no words can express how thankful I am that he was here for 98 years, and that he was my Grandpa. He’s 100% the reason I became a Chiropractor. I spent years listening to & observing his devoted care for his patients and for all of us, and implementing those principles he taught me into Clearview Chiropractic Life Center. They didn’t come any better than Doc Mitchell. I’ll miss him every single day. I had Boss on his birthday, that remains one of the most special things in all my life, what a sweet gift from the Lord that is. When they’re 98 you know this day is coming, and yet it still doesn’t make your heart hurt less, but there are equal amounts of thanksgiving through the tears🥹🙌🏼❤️

3 Things That Make You Age Faster Than You Should

I don’t think that you get old & stiff…I happen to think you get stiff first, and THAT makes you feel old. Losing flexibility as you age plays a huge role in how young or old you “feel.” Stretching is so important, but so is getting adjusted! Keeping your joints in alignment helps maintain the discs between the bones in your spine and prevents degeneration (aka arthritis) in your spine.
The next factor is nutrition & hydration—are you actually getting the nutrients you need? Eating a real food or whole food diet is one of the best ways to make sure you get the nutrients you need, but also AVOID processed foods, processed sugars and seed oils. How inflamed you are really determines how old you feel, and processed foods fast track you to feeling old. Join us for our Eat Well workshop next Tuesday 4/21 if you want a kickstart toward cleaning up your diet & starting to feel better!
The next factor is sleep quality. Repair happens when you sleep, so if you’re staying up too late watching TV or not resting well in the night, that can really affect how your body starts to feel over time. Make sure your room is cool and dark, block blue light from your eyes as soon as the sun goes down by not looking at screens or using high-quality blue-light blocking glasses. Stress plays a huge role in being able to calm your mind enough to sleep. Here’s where the old phrase, “Let go and let God” might genuinely help, if you actually are brave enough to do it. Are you carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders? That stress could be weighing you down to the point that it’s causing your physical body to age faster than you should be.

Overcoming Immuno-Fatigue & Building Immunity BEFORE ‘Cold/Flu Season’ (Part 2)

If you missed part 1, you can find it at askdrsharla.com—Let’s get to the proverbial meat & potatoes of strengthening your immunity. There are things you need to add & things you need to remove:
Add:
1) optimize your Vitamin D levels, getting sunshine on your skin daily is critical, if you cannot do that then supplementing Vitamin D3 is an option. My favorite is Innate Choice Organic D Sufficiency.
2) Heal your GUT: grass-fed bone broth, probiotic foods (like organic sauerkraut) or supplements to restore optimal good bacteria, ION Gut Support daily if you have gut issues whatsoever;
3) Plenty of Vitamin C (citrus fruits and cruciferous vegetables are great sources, Vitamin A (liver, cod liver oil, carrots sweet potatoes) I like a desiccated beef organ supplement called Organ+, Elderberry;
4) Cold Plunges or Cold Showers, just 1-3 minutes can give your immune system a boost;
5) Prioritize good, restful sleep

Remove:
1) Processed sugar (in drinks or foods), it’s the easiest & fasted way to tank your immunity;
2) Products made with processed grains & white flour;
3) Processed food in general, junk food, products that contain more than 3-4 ingredients especially ones you can’t pronounce; 4) Stress;
5) Antibiotics, they can significantly decrease your immunity over time
