A lot of the students I work with live with joint discomfort, stiffness, old injuries, or bodies that don’t always move the way they used to.

And what they don’t need is to be told to push harder. They need movement that’s supportive, not aggressive.

The way I teach yoga is built around a few simple principles:
👉 moving joints through comfortable ranges
👉 building strength and stability around them
👉 using breath to reduce guarding and tension
👉 adapting poses instead of forcing shapes

That’s what “motion is lotion” actually looks like in real life. Not powering through pain. Not chasing end-range flexibility. Just consistent, intentional movement that helps you feel better in your body.

If you’ve been wanting a clear place to start a yoga practice (or start again), I’m hosting a free 5-day Yoga for Beginners Over 50 challenge starting January 26th.

Is there anyone here that considers themselves a yoga beginner? 🙋‍♀️

Yoga isn’t about checking boxes or matching a picture-perfect pose in a book.

It’s about meeting your body where it is and choosing the version of the practice that actually supports you.

Sometimes that means props.
Sometimes it means being a little off center.
Sometimes it means letting “perfect” go altogether.

It’s all yoga.

If this resonates, drop a 🧡 in the comments.

(Can you tell I had fun with this trend? 😄)

This week’s episode of Yoga for Longevity is about the 5 pillars of longevity (a simple framework for knowing what to practice for healthy, vibrant aging).

It’s amazing what happens when we focus on simple, intentional movement.

This is the reminder so many of us need at the end of the year.

I know it’s easy to get discouraged seeing where you are vs. where you want to be. (Guilty 🙋‍♀️)

But your yoga practice isn’t a race. Your health isn’t a race. Progress comes from starting where you are, listening to what your body is telling you, and choosing the next small step.

What does “beginning from where you are” look like for you today?

Caveat: Everyone is at a different place physically, so these movements may not be the right fit for every body.

I’m sharing them because they have been helping one of my private clients in her 70s feel more confident getting up and down off the floor, and they may be helpful for you too.

1️⃣ Wall Chair Pose
We use this to strengthen her quads, and you can adjust the depth to what feels right in your body. Try driving through the balls of your feet and pretend like you’re pushing your feet away from the wall.

2️⃣ Supported Crescent Lunge Step-Backs
So important! These build hip mobility, control, and strengthen the glutes and quads. You can use a chair for support, blocks, or no props at all. Keep your knee right over your ankle and drive through your front heel as you rise. This tells your glutes to help out, which is a big part of making kneeling transitions and step-ups feel easier.

3️⃣ Cat/Cow with Knee Hover
This variation builds upper body and deep core strength so you can push yourself up off the floor. It also teaches what I call the foot-to-core connection. As you press your toes into the floor and lift through your center, your lower body and core begin to work together.

👉 Note: My client has arthritis in her wrists and knees, so we use a blanket or knee pad under her knees and blocks under her hands when she’s on the floor, and you can too if that feels better. There are also ways to work on the upper body and core strength WITHOUT getting on the ground. Let me know if you want me to show some options.

When you combine all of this intentional movement with the body awareness and mindfulness that yoga brings, that’s when things really start to change.

If you’d like help building these skills in a way that fits your body, I offer private yoga sessions both in person and online. DM me and I’ll share the details.
