Autumn: The Metal Element

The foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine is rooted in nature, and represented by the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The elements are alive around us in nature, and also represent different factors within each of us. Each element is represented by a season. Autumn is the season associated with the Metal Element. The organ systems represented by Metal are the Lung and Large Intestine .

Metal represents our internal spark that helps us feel connected: When our Metal energy is in balance, we can feel this spark alive and vital in our spirit. It gives to our lives a sense of quality. We are able to see and feel the connections with the universe around us and our own place within it. When our Metal energy is out of balance we may feel lost, disconnected, and grief may overwhelm our daily lives.

Tips to maintain a healthy and balanced Metal energy this Autumn, and always:
Large Intestine: The Large Intestine is represented by Metal in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and its function is to help our physical bodies eliminate toxins and waste. This is also a function on an emotional level. Autumn is a time to ā€œlet goā€, a time for cleaning out the old and preparing for the new. We can do this by looking at situations in our lives that no longer serve a purpose, and allow ourselves to let them go, so that we can prepare for the new experiences that are yet to come.

Lung: The Lung is also represented by Metal in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and its function is to take in the new, fresh air, which helps strengthen our body, mind and spirit. It is also a way to ā€œbreathe inā€, or allow new experiences to come into our lives. Autumn is a time to focus on this rhythm of letting go and taking in the new.

Deep Breathing: Deep breathing on a regular basis has health benefits on the physical and mental levels, and it is easy to do on our own, in the comforts of our own home, at the office, or in the car. Take time every morning and evening to practice deep breathing. It can be simple deep breaths, or you may find guided breathing techniques or meditations to be more suitable. Breathe in the fresh, crisp Autumn air, and prepare for all of the new and exciting experiences that life has to offer you. Happy Autumn :)

We are now entering Late Summer...see how to connect with this season from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, focusing on the mind, body and spirit. Enjoy!

Late Summer: The Earth Element
The foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine is rooted in nature, and represented by the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The elements are alive around us in nature, and also represent different factors within each of us. Each element is represented by a season. Late summer is the season associated with the Earth Element. The organ systems represented by Earth are the Spleen and Stomach, our digestive organs.

Earth energy is akin to the mother, hence the phrase ā€œmother earthā€: The nurturing energy of the mother is one that offers security, a sense of safety and nourishment. There is an important correlation to nutritional nourishment, however the earth energy offers nourishment for the mind and spirit as well. When our earth energy is in balance we are able to digest food, as well as digest life and its experiences with ease and comfort.

Healthy habits for a balanced Earth Element, body, mind, and spirit:
Body: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we recommend eating like a king in the morning, a prince in the afternoon and your smallest meal in the evening. Large meals at the beginning of the day will help provide energy for the rest of the day. Having healthy protein and fiber rich foods during each meal will help balance blood sugar levels and energy as well. Eating warm and cooked foods will also help maintain energy and support smooth and healthy digestion. Iced drinks and cold foods should be avoided, and if eaten, it is better to have with some hot tea.

Mind/Spirit: When the earth energy is out of balance, one may experience worry, over-thinking and anxiety. One’s ā€œappetite for lifeā€ may become lessened, and a sense of security may be lost. The relationship between the mind and the body is strong with the Earth element, and when worry becomes prominent, digestion is often affected. Many people ā€œfeel their emotionsā€ in their stomach.
Finding ways to nurture your body, mind and spirit will help strengthen your Earth element, and bring more peace into your life. Nurture your mind with information and surroundings that bring you joy and positive challenges. Nurture your spirit by finding time to do the things you love on a regular basis. Nurture your body with healthy food choices, and eating food that you truly enjoy. Acupuncture is a helpful tool if you are hoping to balance your digestion, calm anxiety, or strengthen your Earth element.

Happy Summer!!!
In Chinese Medicine, each season corresponds to one of the 5 Elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood). The summer is represented by the element of Fire. After the hard work of the spring we feel a lightness of the spirit and a sense of freedom, and there is nothing to be done than to relax and enjoy the warmth. Now we have the time to enjoy this wonderful feeling and share it with our friends, family and community. :)
Tips to maintain a healthy and balanced Fire energy this summer, and always:
Mind/Spirit:
Love and joy are an expression of the Fire Element: Let your inner love and joy be expressed freely! Allow yourself to participate in the activities that make your heart sing. Rest and rejuvenate, share this joy and love with those closest to you, and allow this fire to fill your heart, and warm you for the whole of the year to come.
Body: Healthy eating during the heat of the summer
Cook lighter meals, and regularly add a little spicy flavor, such as cayenne pepper, as this will bring the warmth of the Fire Element into your diet. On the hottest days, serve more cooling foods such as salads, tofu, sprouts, cucumber, mint, apples, watermelon, lemons and limes. Enjoy creating beautiful meals, share them with friends and family, and let the warmth of the sun permeate this time you have together. Laugh and enjoy! :)
