To celebrate an incredible month of advocating for breast health awareness, our team members came together for Pink Out Day - honoring survivors, supporting those in treatment and remembering the loved ones we’ve lost. 💗

From Making Strides and Sista Strut to the Detroit Pistons Breast Health Game and countless other community events, our patients, team members and community partners united to spread the word about early detection and the importance of breast cancer screening.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this month a powerful reminder that together, we can make a difference!

We’re proud to share that hundreds of our physicians have been recognized on Hour Detroit Magazine's annual list of Top Doctors in Metro Detroit - including 5x honoree and OB-GYN Dr. Monique Swain. 👏

In her featured interview with Hour Detroit, Dr. Swain discussed her research developing interventions to improve fertility preservation and counseling rates for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. She also highlighted her excitement around emerging screening techniques like molecular breast imaging and contrast-enhanced mammography that can help detect cancer earlier and improve outcomes.

"Many of the patients in our communities face barriers to accessing OB-GYN services, particularly rural and underserved areas," Dr. Swain shared in her interview. "Understanding the social determinants of health and the importance of health care advocacy can lead to better outcomes and greater health care equity."

Congratulations to Dr. Swain and all of our Top Docs recognized for driving progress and delivering exceptional care across our communities! Read her full interview in Hour Detroit Magazine: https://bit.ly/49ov5Yo

When Ron Dunfield collapsed on his bathroom floor Thanksgiving morning, his wife Nancy immediately recognized the signs: left-side numbness, facial drooping, slurred speech. Ron was having a stroke.

Ron and Nancy were both retired registered nurses, so they knew time was of the essence. Nancy called 9-1-1. A call was also made to the emergency department at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital – a certified stroke center where Ron worked for years – alerting them a stroke patient was on the way.

Ron’s former colleagues started working on him immediately. A CT scan confirmed a blocked artery caused Ron’s stroke. He received a procedure to remove the clot, called a thrombectomy. Less than 4 hours passed from the onset of Ron’s symptoms to the clot removal – and he left the hospital with no lasting health issues.

As a stroke survivor and nurse, Ron urges everyone to remember the acronym FAST: face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, time to call 9-1-1. It helps you identify the symptoms of a stroke and reminds you what needs to be done immediately.

“Don’t wait,” Ron says. “Don’t drive yourself. Call an ambulance. Time lost is brain lost.”

Our structural heart team at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital recently performed their first ever MitraClip G5 procedure to treat leaky heart valve!

Leaky heart valve, or mitral valve regurgitation, is a condition where the heart’s mitral valve doesn’t close tightly, allowing blood to flow backward into the heart. It can cause symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath.

But a new minimally invasive procedure called MitraClip G5 can help treat this condition. Using a catheter, a small clip (about the size of a dime) is placed on the mitral valve to help it close more completely, improving blood flow. Most people see improvements in their symptoms soon after the procedure. It’s an effective alternative for those who cannot undergo open heart surgery, or for whom medication isn’t enough.

Here's to innovation in cardiovascular care!
