❤️ Menopause and your heart are more connected than you think.

Dr. Sindhu Koshy, our cardiologist and menopause-certified practitioner, is shining a light on the connection between menopause and cardiovascular risk.

She sat down with WDIV Local 4 / ClickOnDetroit to discuss hormonal changes during menopause and how experiencing common symptoms like hot flashes or night sweats more frequently can signal a higher risk of heart issues.

Her message to women: don’t overlook your heart health during menopause — early awareness can save lives.

We’re celebrating a major milestone as our heart & vascular team at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital successfully completed their first atrial fibrillation (AFib) ablation! This minimally invasive procedure targets the heart tissue causing an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), creating a small scar that blocks abnormal signals and helps restore a normal rhythm.

Thanks to new guidelines, electrophysiologists can now offer this advanced treatment to more patients across Michigan, bringing life-changing heart care closer to home. ❤️

“All I remembered was driving to the hospital and parking my car," says Jeffrey, who went into cardiac arrest at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital while visiting a relative. "I don't remember walking into the hospital or sitting down in the lobby."

Theresa Brodoski, an assistant clinical manager, found Jeffrey unresponsive. He appeared to be sitting back in a chair but upon closer look, she noticed stiffness in his neck. He wasn’t swallowing. She assessed him and found he had no pulse.

"He could have been just napping, but I wasn't going to take the chance and walk away," says Theresa. She yelled for help and security officer John Stokes rushed over to get Jeffrey on the floor. Theresa began rounds of CPR until rapid response arrived.

Jeffrey was immediately transferred to the emergency department where he coded multiple times – meaning he wasn’t breathing or his heart stopped. He was put on a ventilator and underwent therapeutic hypothermia, a treatment that lowers your body temperature in an effort to preserve brain function. When he was discharged from the hospital – nearly 2 weeks later – he stayed at a rehab facility to continue his recovery.

Now Jeffrey is home and fully recovered, thanks to our team’s swift action, attentiveness and expertise. “I am grateful to God and the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital staff for saving my life that day," he says.

Glycogen is what sugar turns into when it’s stored by the body. Researchers found that high glycogen levels inside of a tumor accelerated cancer growth.

Tanis Shelters has so much to be thankful for. More than 25 years ago, the 62-year-old grandmother walked into the Henry Ford Brighton Center for Recovery at one of the lowest points in her life. Today, she’s reflecting on lessons learned from more than 2 decades of sobriety.

“They saved my life,” says Tanis, who grew up in a family of addiction. “Without this place, I was headed for serious trouble. It gave me tools to learn how to live a better life.”

Tanis’ story is a powerful testament to the work happening every day at the Henry Ford Brighton Center for Recovery. "We won't abandon you in your times of struggle,” says Olivia Bidus, the center’s manager of behavioral health. “We want to be here. We want to support you."
