MedX-HS is Back for Another School Year!

Sanford Health Grand Forks kicked off the first MedX-HS event of the year with a focus on nursing, giving high school students a behind-the-scenes look at health care careers and the education paths that lead there. Nursing Supervisors, Karlie Amundson and Amanda Fincher, showed students how to remove staples from oranges and provided CPR demonstrations.

Join us in East Grand Forks next month as we explore careers in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy! Students will get hands-on insights into these impactful professions and learn how to start their journey in rehabilitation sciences.

Interested students should connect with their high school career counselors for more information.

Unexpected – that’s what injuries usually are.

If you ever find yourself injured and on the way to walk-in care or waiting overnight before seeing a provider, the RICE method is what you can do right away to help relieve pain, limit swelling and speed up healing.

Children who have gone through intense trauma, like abuse or the loss of a loved one, benefit greatly from having safe spaces to play, create and relax in.

Thanks to a gift from Panda Cares, the charity affiliated with Panda Express, through the Sanford Health Foundation, a new safe space with art supplies, toys and more was opened at the Sanford Traumatic Stress Treatment Center and the Sanford Children's CARE Clinic. This room gives children in the Fargo region a place where they can feel comfortable, helping them heal and recover.

Learn more about the new Panda Cares Center of Hope:

A donation of more than $200,000 helped create the Panda Cares Center for Hope inside Sanford Fargo's Traumatic Stress Treatment Center.

“I did feel the pop and then I was laying there for a while. My parents came down and coaches, and I remember saying, ‘I’m out for the rest of the season.’”

Ashlyn Buchholz tore her ACL and meniscus in the middle of her junior basketball season.

With help from Dr. Anthony Kasch, Ashlyn made it back to the court and the track field her senior year of high school.

In places like Mountain Lake, Minnesota, health care providers try to go the extra mile to support the children of their community, and sometimes all that takes is a good book.

Watch how Susan Goodemote, a nurse practitioner, is doing more to care for local children during their well child visits:

Sue Goodemote, NP, brought the Reach Out and Read program to three Sanford Health clinics. Now every child 0-5 leaves with a new book.

"My parents were told multiple times that I wouldn't survive. I was baptized in the hospital. They never thought I was coming home. Deb was part of that care that made sure that I got to come home and then someday have three babies of my own."

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Deb Koens cared for Josie Folden during her first days of life in 1995. Twenty-eight years later, at the end of 2023, she cared for Josie's third child, Luci, in the same NICU.

"To be able to know that I was fortunate to be able to care for both of them, it kind of makes you feel like this has been a long, successful career," said Koens.

Following nine miscarriages, the Folden family welcomes their third baby and an unexpected reunion in the Sanford USD Medical Center's NICU.

Kellie Plutowski was providing home health care for a patient when she realized his furnace was acting up – so she nominated him to a local program to get a new one.

For Plutowski, the nomination was yet another act of service for a patient in need. It wasn’t health care, but it was just as important.

When Good Samaritan home health nurse Kellie Plutowski noticed her 96-year-old patient's furnace was acting up, she helped him get a new one.

Sanford Health Therapy Departments in East Grand Forks and Grand Forks organized a shoe drive in local clinics and collected over 148 pairs of shoes for the Soles4Souls project.

The shoe drive fundraiser collects new or gently used shoes and sneakers to support the mission of turning donated footwear into funding for global anti-poverty initiatives. By participating, donors promote recycling and help provide shoes to those in need, reinforcing environmental responsibility and community support.

All of the shoes and sneakers will go into micro-enterprise programs in developing countries around the world. These programs serve as long-term opportunities to break the cycle of poverty for those in need. When the shoes arrive, they are sorted and, together with our partners, we determine where they need to be sent to make the most impact.

The impact of this donate is diversion of 185 pounds from going to local landfills, reducing the environmental impact of unwanted shoes. The donation also created about $1339 of economic opportunity for families and communities around the world through the opportunity and 4Relief programs which is used towards necessities, education and economic opportunities for their families.
