“There are 9.7 million Indigenous people in the U.S.—just 3% of the population. But for our communities, this is 100% of our world.”

Dr. LeeAnna Muzquiz (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes) recently addressed the American Medical Association about the long-standing mistrust many Native people carry into the exam room—trauma rooted in centuries of medical mistreatment and forced policies.

Dr. Muzquiz represents the Association of American Indian Physicians on the AMA Minority Affairs Section Governing Council.

In an article published on the AMA website, she challenged assumptions around "cultural competence," instead uplifting cultural humility, listening, and community-driven care.

🩺 “Wouldn't it be nice if the people serving the community were of the community?” Dr. Muzquiz asked.

She’s right—and that’s why increasing the number of Indigenous physicians is critical to healing. Native students make up less than 1% of medical school applicants. That must change.

One week ago we wrapped up Summer Institute 2025! After an exciting trip to Minneapolis for the MN Science Museum, MN Zoo, and Valley Fair physics day, it was time to celebrate. In an evening if joy, laughter, a few tears, and a meal shared together, instructors awarded and recognized our students for their hard work and dedication. Family groups said their goodbyes, and the INMED family became that much bigger. We now focus on our academic year programs, excited to see our Summer Intitute students next June! Our people are what make us great!
