Hi everyone!

Live Well Counseling Center is super excited to be hosting our first Advanced EMDR training on November 8th in person!

Lead by EMDRIA Approved Consultant, Jessica Downs, LCSW, this advanced training reviews the eight phases of EMDR with a focus on case conceptualization and the AIP model. It integrates Polyvagal Theory and dissociation, with an emphasis on the interplay between Phases 1 and 2. The course also teaches advanced skills for preparation and reprocessing.

As you breathe, you influence your heart rate. Slowing things down can help us make our way out of survival states and toward our ventral circuit.

We recommend the HeartMath app to get practice on synchronizing your heart and breath.

Noticing what you feel in your body can help you track where you’re hanging out in your nervous system.

Numbness can indicate spending time in that dorsal circuit.

Gentle movement, stillness, nurturing and nature can help you gently move toward home, if this is where you’re landing.

There are no right or wrong ways to regulate. The key is building a robust menu of things that work. Sometimes we need a mental vacation, and other times we need to be more deeply connected to ourselves.

Noticing (your body, emotions, and stories) and naming the state of your nervous system is a big step toward feeling better.

When we notice and name the state we’re in, we can focus on what we need to do to shift away from that state, rather than self-blame or self-loathing.

We’d love to help you chart a course for navigating your nervous system. Head to our website for a free guide that will help you tailor an approach that works for you.

It is not a moral failing. While irritability doesn’t typically help your relationships, it does not mean you’re a bad person. It means you’re probably hanging out in your sympathetic nervous system.

Try to shift your perspective toward what your body is trying to tell you. And rather than trying to white-knuckle your way into a smile, notice what helps you move out of your sympathetic nervous system, toward ventral (home).

Consider mobilization strategies - walking, running, pushing into a door frame, taking a drive. Breathing can also be helpful. Play with big inhales, and long, slow exhales.

We’d love to help you chart a course for navigating your nervous system. Head to our website for a free guide that will help you tailor an approach that works for you.

This poem helps me to remember that I have inherent dignity and worth, just by being. My value does not come from something I do, make, create - I just am.

It also reminds me of my place in the world. There are not humans and then nature, we are nature. We are part of the natural world, the natural order. Our attempt to create a divide and remove ourselves from nature has created a lot of pain and heartache. I only have to let the soft animal of my body love what it loves.

Courtney specializes in working with kids and teens. She is so good at seeing the dignity of all the young people who enter her office.

You don’t have to overhaul your life to feel better. Start with something small. Five minutes sitting in stillness by the window. Going for a walk. A youtube meditation. Saying kind words to yourself.

Small moments of regulation build a big ability to flex in your nervous system, and a deeper sense of control over your life.
