Dreams, by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Working with a teacher trained in the full classical Pilates method can make all the difference in your practice. Through the use of the reformer and other apparatus, I’ll help you access each exercise more effectively, build true body awareness, and develop balanced strength—just as Joseph Pilates intended. Classical training gives me the tools to spot inefficient movement patterns and guide you toward deeper, more intelligent movement. As Joe said, the goal is to return to life—and that’s exactly what this work can do. I have a few private session spots open—DM me if you’re ready to take your practice to the next level! 💪

It's that season again. Not all colds are the same. Here’s what Ayurveda says about how to handle when you're under the weather.

All types: no juice - only warm water and herbal tea; no honey in hot drinks; lots of sleep; no exercise; eat less.

Phlegmy/Kapha: honey, cinnamon and black pepper; cardamom tea for a cough; lemon tea with ginger and cinnamon; barley soup; steam with eucalyptus oil; no dairy.

Inflamed, sore throat/Pitta: licorice or chamomile tea; sleep with a clove in your cheek; gargle salt and turmeric; no alcohol or caffeine; fever - only herbal tea and light broth until you sweat or have a bowel movement.

Dry cough/Vata: castor oil on a cotton ball in your navel to ground Vata; sesame oil on chest then steam; ginger tea; warm spiced stew; no honey.

This steamed winter salad ticks all the boxes of providing Ayurveda’s six identified tastes. By adding each of these tastes to meals, we are more satisfied, have fewer cravings and snacking tendencies, plus our meals are more easily digested so our tastebuds AND our tummies are happy! Here’s what’s in it-

Steamed root veggies with quinoa, spinach, and sesame miso dressing::

Sweet:: root veggies - sweet potato, parsnip, carrot, golden beet
Salty:: miso in the dressing
Pungent:: black pepper and cumin on the veggies
Bitter:: spinach
Astringent:: pumpkin seeds and quinoa
Sour:: rice vinegar in the dressing

When you dive deeper into Joseph Pilates’ philosophy through his writings, particularly in Return to Life, it’s interesting to see how the practices of Pilates and Ayurveda can compliment each other. While Joe is known for his exercise system and equipment, he was clear that movement is only one strand of a larger web of healthy daily and seasonal practices.

• Pilates emphasized that “proper diet and sufficient sleep must supplement our exercise,” echoing Ayurveda’s foundational teachings around aligned routines (ahara/diet, nidra/sleep, and vihara/daily habits).

• Both systems recognize the value of gentle movement after meals to support digestion and circulation, and both view recuperative sleep as essential for mental calm and nervous system balance.

• Pilates stated that the body “breathes through the pores of your skin,” which resonates with Ayurvedic practices that support circulation. His advocacy for dry brushing parallels Ayurveda’s use of garshana to stimulate lymph, awaken the tissues, and counter stagnation.

• Pilates’ seasonal advice, such as winter’s call to breathe properly, walk briskly, and move with intention, mirrors Ayurveda’s seasonal adjustments to routine and intensity.

• While the Pilates movement sequences remains relatively fixed, subtle energetic shifts in quality of movement and even choice of apparatus day to day and season to season can also harmonize with seasonal living the way that Ayurveda and yoga do.

Seen through this lens, Pilates becomes not just a fixed method but a living practice, one that can be adapted to daily and seasonal shifts and be practiced as a wholistic lifestyle. Practiced this way, Pilates and Ayurveda work in harmony, each reinforcing the other’s goal of cultivating resilience, clarity, and balanced vitality throughout the year.

“The House of Belonging”
Written by David Whyte

I awoke
this morning
in the gold light
turning this way
and that

thinking for
a moment
it was one
day
like any other.

But
the veil had gone
from my
darkened heart
and
I thought

it must have been the quiet
candlelight
that filled my room,

it must have been
the first
easy rhythm
with which I breathed
myself to sleep,

it must have been
the prayer I said
speaking to the otherness
of the night.

And
I thought
this is the good day
you could
meet your love,

this is the gray day
someone close
to you could die.

This is the day
you realize
how easily the thread
is broken
between this world
and the next

and I found myself
sitting up
in the quiet pathway
of light,

the tawny
close grained cedar
burning round
me like fire
and all the angels of this housely
heaven ascending
through the first
roof of light
the sun has made.

This is the bright home
in which I live,
this is where
I ask
my friends
to come,
this is where I want
to love all the things
it has taken me so long
to learn to love.

This is the temple
of my adult aloneness
and I belong
to that aloneness
as I belong to my life.

There is no house
like the house of belonging.
