Coinsurance is the percentage of the cost of a covered service that you pay after you've met your deductible.

Since it can be a confusing concept, here's an example of how it works:

Before you pay your full deductible, you'll pay 100% of the out-of-pocket costs of care. So, if a doctor's visits costs $100 in out-of-pocket costs, you'll pay $100.

After you've met your deductible, for a doctor's visit that costs $100, if your coinsurance percentage is 20%, you'll pay $20 and your insurance company will pay what remains ($80).

Unlike a copay, coinsurance is generally billed after the visit instead of being paid at the time of the visit, and it is always a percentage of the cost of care rather than a flat dollar amount.

Like a copay, coinsurance counts toward your out-of-pocket max (the maximum amount you'll pay out of pocket in a plan year).

Your Explanation of Benefits is not a bill.

Don't feel bad if you've been confused by these documents in the past! Even though Explanation of Benefits (EOB) documents say "This is not a bill," in most ways, they look exactly like one.

An EOB is designed to show you how your claim was processed.

The document will include the maximum amount insurance could cover for your visit/procedure, what your plan covered, and what you will owe when you receive your request for payment.

Save your EOB documents when you receive them, as it's always helpful to be able to compare the explanation with the actual bill to identify errors before you make a payment.
