Maxine C. Fletcher

Ms Maxine Fletcher aka mom Granny grams was born on July 24th 1934 and peacefully made her way to heaven at Hopewest Care Center on July 29th 2025. She is survived by her sons James “JJ” and Keith, daughter Debbie, daughter in law Tammy Fletcher, grandchildren mollie Maggie jamie Jeremiah and Jordan, her sister in law Virginia Coates , many nieces and nephews, Teena, Tony, Tammy and so many to name. She is preceded in death by her spouse Jim Sr , James and Mollie Coates and her daughter Terri and so many friends in Christ.

Maxine Fletcher through her life raised her family from the south states to California to her favorite place Arizona and then settled in Palisade Colorado. She and her late husband Jim Sr built the family business, JayMax Sales, down by the Colorado River there. The business was a success and thrived for over 30 years. Within those walls and rooms, so many friends were made. The greatest success in her eyes was employing many and building foundations and friendships that would continue through to the end of her life. She enjoyed game and tea time with many friends from her southern baptist church, cooking, potlucks, outings with her family at various places through town. She also enjoyed singing at church. She loved to travel far and wide and be out and eat the best food. It was there she also longed for, desired and enjoyed time with others. Maxine never forgot what it felt like to “still feel small when you stand beside the ocean” or to enjoy a mountain sunset or full moon. She loved her dog Libby and her southern music and country, patriotic ways !. Ms Maxine or “Mut” was never afraid to face challenges in life including her latest illness. She could advocate for those in need and offer a hand out. Her faith in God was the basis of her existence and she spread that message to all who surrounded her. We will never forget her Fish fries, fried chicken, potato salad, banana pudding, peaches n cream , or her touch to the grits she stirred, or any dish she made ! No one could scramble an egg or filet a fish or snap a pea quite like her! …..

Maxine, also, recently enjoyed social media time, coloring apps and to her latest philosophy on life being compared to a train ride. I hope you all can take this from her …..

Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers , requiring that we give the best of ourselves .

The mystery to everyone is , we do not know at which station we , ourselves , will step down .. So we must live in the best way , love , forgive and offer the best of who we are .

Keep Maxine's spirit alive, live your life to the fullest and eat the cake !

Gertrude Hayashi

Gertrude Elaine Hayashi joined her Heavenly Father, in the Kingdom of Heaven, on June 16th, 2025. Her final moments were with Shanna, at the HopeWest Care Center. She left this earth at the admirable age of 76.

Gertie lived an amazing and full life, overflowing with love and accomplishment. It started when Gertie was born on August 2,1948, to Mickey Jim and Geneva June Hundley-Drake in Grand Junction, CO. She remained in the valley, growing herself, her business, children and grandchildren,

Being the 7th of 8 children, she spent most of her time working and playing with her many brothers and sisters. With Mom working as much as she could, the oldest took after the youngest and, the youngest played. Despite being too poor to afford most things a child would want, they made the best of it, with never a dull moment. Whether it was trying to help momma in the kitchen, using the old washboard for laundry, or splashing in the local rivers and canals. Always constantly being harassed by the older brothers, in good fun of course.

In 1964 Gertie married Dewey Lee Wilder and had a son. Charles Eugene Wilder was born in 1965. They quickly divorced after. She started waitressing at the Crane’s Cafe, taking care of her son, soon to embark into cosmetology school. The year being 1973. While at the Crane’s, she met Oliver Hayashi, when he bought the restaurant. They soon fell in love and had their daughter, Shanna Suzanne Hayashi. They were married in 1981, and remained together until his death in 2015.

In 1975, Gertie completed beauty school, graduating as one of the top of her class. She spent the next 30 plus years owning her own salons. She first owned The Trend with her best friend and partners Beau Gonzales and Lucia DiThomaso. She then spent the rest of her career, owning Lakeside Hair and Nails with Gloria Vance. She ended up selling Lakeside to her long time employee Lynn Lard, Gertie had to retired in 2010 to stay at home and take care of her ailing husband, Ollie. After Ollie had passed, she spent her time being the best mother, grandmother, and great grandmother that anyone could ask for. Her best moments were holding them and hugging the ones too big to hold. Through everything, until the end, she always gave a hug and a kiss and made sure you knew she loved you.

After several years and a few trips to Oklahoma, relaying information gathered by various family members, in 2005 she and her whole family were accepted into the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma. Paving the way for generations the heritage she was sure of as a child. The Daily Sentinel even featured an article in the paper because of DNA being used as proof.

Besides spending time with family and friends, she enjoyed playing softball and dancing. Winning several trophies and prizes. Music was a staple in her life. Passing her love to her children and grandsons. Many road trips were made enjoyable with sing alongs. Classic Country and Gospel were her favorites.

Gertie is preceded in death by her son Charles (Chuck), her husband Ollie, both parents, 5 brothers Jimmy, Don, Johnnie, Denny and Mickey, and sister Mary. Niece Cindy Miller and nephew Travis Drake.

Gertie was loved by many and is survived by daughter Shanna, grandsons Trevor Wilder (Emmalynne), Josiah Hayashi and great grandson Ezra and great granddaughter Emry Wilder all of Grand Junction. Sister June(Dwayne) of Montrose. Twelve nieces and nine nephews and several great and great great nieces and nephews.

A memorial is planned for later.

Dennis Keith Sellers

With a heavy heart, we are saddened to say Dennis Keith Sellers I passed away on July 4th, 2025. Dennis was born on October 4th, 1957, in Denver, Colorado, to his mother Eula Mae, who sadly passed away when he was just seven years old. He was immediately adopted and lovingly raised by Mary and Leonard Sellers. He later enlisted in the Navy in 1977. After getting out of the Navy, he decided to begin his chapter in the truck driving business with his brother Steve, while also sharing a passion in everything related to motorcycles. Years later, while living in Southern California, he met the love of his life and soulmate, Betty Lou Crutchfield, and her son Justin—who quickly became one of his own. In the early spring of 1988, they married, and on December 9th brought their second son, Dennis Keith Sellers II "Denny," who was almost Leonard Skynard Sellers into this world. The four of them lived in Southern California, moving to Texas, eventually ending up in this beautiful city, Grand Junction. Dennis’s unconditional love and compassion for his faith, family, and country were deeply strong. His drive to provide and protect his family was limitless. Dennis enjoyed spending time with his family and friends—driving big rigs, riding motorcycles, and fishing. Oh, wait—watching football too. Go Broncos! He really had a green thumb for gardening; you name it, he could grow it. Dennis is survived by his two sons, Denny and Justin; his mother, Mary; his brother, Kevin; and sisters, Kathy and Lennete; and many nieces, nephews and friends. As we say goodbye, it feels only fitting to remember that his birthday was on October 4th—10-4—a phrase in radio language meaning “message received.” It’s as if he was always meant to stay connected, to be heard and understood. Known by his handle Nighthawk, he now takes flight one final time—flying high in heaven, where he is reunited with his soul-mate Betty Lou. Though he may be gone from our sight, his spirit carries on—strong, steady, and clear. 10-4, over and out.

John T. Combs

John T. (Tommy) Combs was born Jan 26, 1929, in Elizabeth, Indiana. His life began in a cyclone cellar during an active cyclone, a fitting start for a man whose life would be defined by resilience, humor, and strength. Tommy moved to Colorado at an early age and spent most of his childhood in Grand Junction, where he attended local schools and graduated from GJHS in 1946. In 1948, he married Elsie M. Combs. Together, they enjoyed 76 years of marriage and cherished their family of five generations, which included two daughters, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Tommy was one of three children born to Roy E and Violet H Combs,

After their marriage, Tommy and Elsie moved to Fruita, Colorado, where they raised their family and co-owned Walton's Market. He gave back to this community by being an active member of the Fruita City Council, serving as Mayor of Fruita, and volunteering for the Fruita Fire and Rescue Team. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Fruita Methodist Church. After selling Walton's Market, Tommy continued in the grocery business as manager of a City Market in Grand Junction. He and Elsie later owned and operated Tommy's Meat Block in Fruita. Tommy also enjoyed his years of managing the Gibson store and later, Monterey Apartments, where his kindness touched many lives. He was deeply devoted to serving others. He repaired hundreds of metal tricycles for children in need and hand-crafted over 11,000 wooden toy cars, which he donated through the Kiwanis Club to children's hospitals. He also volunteered hours to transport patients in need to medical appointments. A man of many talents, Tommy found great joy in music as a member of the Barbershoppers of America, singing with quartets and large groups alike. He also played both the organ and the accordion. Time outdoors was important. His love of the mountains took him on many hikes and outdoor camping adventures. He always enjoyed planting his beautiful flowers, trees, and landscaping every family home.

His beloved wife, Elsie Combs, passed away on March 13, 2025, and in honor of both her and Tommy, the family will host an Open House

August 16th from 1-4 pm at 2701-B Crossroads Blvd.

Tommy will be remembered for his playful spirit, generous heart, love of music, dedication to his community, and most of all, his unwavering devotion to family. His legacy of kindness and service lives on in the countless lives he touched.

We want to thank the Hope West Hospice Team and Nightingale's Home Care for their wonderful help and support.

Horace Sessions Jr.

Horace R. Sessions, Jr, born on November 4, 1946, left this life on June 21, 2025. He was a native of the Eastern US, who became a longtime resident of Colorado, civic leader, and chemist. He was 78 years old.

Throughout his childhood, Horace regularly applied his early fascination with chemistry to the surprise of his siblings with his amazing homemade chemistry lab. He was a precocious and inquisitive child who excelled in academics and athletics.

Horace graduated with honors from Baltimore City College in 1964. Through his accomplishments, he received a full academic scholarship to Bowdoin college in Brunswick, Maine. After Bowdoin, he earned his master's degree from Bucknell in 1971.

His career as a chemist started with his move to Colorado, where he lived in several different areas before settling in Grand Junction. He retired several years ago from Cray Valley Chemical.

While living in Colorado, Horace made numerous friends due to his affable personality and genuine friendliness. Horace's desire to help others led him to become a past President of the Redlands Rotary Club and Vice-chair of the Local Emergency Planning Committee.

In Loving Memory of Elaine Hutchings

Celebrating a Life Lived with Grace, Humor, and Love

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Elaine Hutchings, who left us on July 1, 2025, at the age of 80. A cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, Elaine was a beacon of love, strength, and kindness to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Elaine was born on May 9, 1945, the daughter of Adah McSweeney Bossart and David Harry Bossart. She grew up on the Western Slope of Colorado, spending much of her childhood on the family ranch outside of Meeker, where she learned to ride horses. Elaine loved spending time with her grandmother, Agnes Hunt, cooking on the coal stove and caring for the sheep, chickens, and garden. She shared many fond memories of long days as a “cowboy” with her step-grandfather, Edgar.

Elaine loved the theater, singing, and acting. She was involved in theater throughout high school, winning statewide awards, and later starring in many shows at Mesa State College. Her passion for theater stayed with her throughout her life, and she often sang and talked about her time in New York City, where she attended acting school.

Elaine traveled and lived across the U.S. early in her marriage to Barry Hutchings. When they returned to Denver, they welcomed their first child, Scott, born in 1974. Their second child, Erin, was born in 1978. While raising her two children, Elaine ran her own catering business and wedding consultancy from home.

She later moved to Dallas where she was involved in several businesses, including starting the bakery, “Dough-licious and Sweet,” while she worked evenings at a bill- collecting agency, humorously taking the phone name, “Anita Check.” After earning her MBA, Elaine spent the latter part of her career in the insurance industry — a job she joked she never expected to have, especially since she considered herself a hippie who went to college in Boulder during the ’60s.

Elaine had a zeal for life and enjoyed every day as it came. Known as a colorful character with a quick wit and a generous spirit, her humor and wisdom touched many lives. She loved dressing up, hosting parties and entertaining, creating many cherished memories of family holidays in the kitchen or mixing drinks in the dining room.

She had an extraordinary passion for gardening, cultivating spices and creating recipes – she owned over 100 cookbooks and even started her own spice company. She believed cooking was “an art, not a science,” and if you asked her for a recipe, it was often hard to figure out exactly what went into a particular dish.

Elaine was enamored with all things English, collecting tea sets, reading murder mysteries, especially Agatha Christie, and watching Angela Lansbury in "Murder, She Wrote" throughout her years.

Elaine was kind to everyone and always had something nice to say. She loved golf, acting, and anything that allowed her to be around people. Whenever you saw her, she was smiling and lighting up the room. She had an exceptional talent for making everyone feel valued and loved. Her vibrant spirit served as an inspiration for many and her unwavering support and boundless compassion for her family will define her legacy.

Most of all, Elaine was very proud of her son and daughter and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She spoke of them often. She will be deeply missed by her children and grandchildren, but her memory will live on through family gatherings, laughter, and old movies.

She is survived by her children, Scott Hutchings and Erin Hutchings, her daughter-in- law Erin Mewhinney, and her grandchildren, Collin, Riley, and Natalie. She also leaves behind her three cherished half-sisters, Bonnie Bossart Hébert, Betsy Bossart Littlefield, and Diane Bossart, whom she got to know better on visits back to the Bossart Farm, as well as friends and colleagues who will deeply miss her presence.

A celebration of life will be held later this fall in Denver, where family and friends are invited to gather and honor her remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Rocky Mountain PBS ( www.rmpbs.org ) in her memory.

Though we mourn the loss of Elaine, we find solace in the beautiful memories and the lasting impact she made on our lives. Her love and warmth will continue to guide us, and she will forever be in our hearts.

William P. Woods

Paul was born on April 1 1929 in Watonga, Oklahoma to William and Ola Woods. He lived in Watonga until he was 8 years old, when his family moved to Oregon and California in search of work. He moved to Grand Junction at 9, later moving to Montrose, where they settled and Paul graduated from Montrose High School in 1947.

After graduation from high school, Paul moved to Naturita, Colorado and worked at Vanadium Corporation of America, later hired by Union Carbide Corporation and Dow Chemical Corp. He worked as a machinist, maintenance supervisor, and finally retired as the Master Mechanic for the mill in Uravan. He retired from Dow Chemical in 1986 with 37 years of service.

Paul loved working with his hands and building things. After settling in Nucla and meeting his life partner Joanne Johnson, he built a log house for their home and they married in 1955. They lived in the log house for several years, including one significant remodel of the home. In 1976, Paul began building a second brick home in Nucla, and they lived there for another 25 years.

In 2002, Paul and Joanne moved to Grand Junction. They became active members of Clifton Christian Church, with Paul volunteering for the food and clothing program.

Paul was an accomplished wood worker, making many pieces of furniture and turning candlesticks, wooden bowls, spoons, and spatulas from native Colorado woods. This hobby brought hours of satisfaction to him, and he often gave visitors a wooden spoon or spatula for their use.

Paul enjoyed hunting and fishing, hunting well into his 80’s and his favorite vacations always involved fishing, including deep sea fishing in Hawaii and Alaska, and many weekends and trips to Colorado reservoirs.

Paul is survived by his spouse, Joanne Woods, daughters Pamela Johnson and Judy Haining, grandson Justin Johnson, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Food Bank Program at Clifton Christian Church. https://cccfoodbank.com/

A Memorial Service will be held at Clifton Christian Church at 11am on July 14, 2025. Clifton Christian Church is located at 3241 F-1/4 Rd, Clifton.

John Patrick Pabst

John graced us with his presence on Earth for over 2 billion, 593 million, 728,00 seconds. A clever trivia fount and pun lover, his storytelling could entertain or bore the best of us depending on how many PBRs had been consumed.

A longtime resident and businessman of Grand Junction, John was born in Milwaukee and grew up on a sprawling cattle ranch in Snowmass, Colorado, before celebrities like the Kardashians "discovered" it.

John enjoyed spinning yarns with anyone, especially friends and family on Lake Powell or their small family farm in Grand Junction, where he raised his two sons and endlessly entertained his nieces and nephews with hay bale mazes and model boat races.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Cathey (Helmig) Pabst, sons John Pabst, Jr. (Sarah) of Kirkland, Washington, and Charles Pabst of Grand Junction, and his five grandchildren, Grace Bordner (Daniel), Grant Pabst, Benjamin Pabst, Leo Pabst, and Thaddeus Pabst.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Hope West or Holy Family School
