Most years on Independence Day, Colorado National Monument issues a special use permit for the annual re-enactment of the 4th of July flag raising and Independence Monument climb, led by first Monument Superintendent, John Otto, in the year 1911.
This year, however, a breeding pair of peregrine falcons established a nest on the climbing route, and the chicks were not old enough to fledge the nest before the 4th of July. In the spirit of honoring our history, the monument will be hosting an alternative Independence Day celebration instead of the climb to commemorate the holiday.
From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on July 4th, 2025, visit the following location:
Independence Monument View
Park rangers and a climbing community representative will be at Independence Monument View with activities for kids and adults. Participants will learn about the legacy of John Otto, the significance of his historic climb, general climbing safety, monument history, peregrine falcons, and the importance of recreation and preservation. The American flag will be displayed at the overlook throughout the event.
