We get these questions all the time and I can assure you, we’ll continue to get them for the rest of time. And guess what? I LOVE IT!!
I absolutely love new-to-massage clients because I want everyone to love massage just as much as I do.
So here it is:
Where do I put my arms? 🙆🤷
Wherever they’re comfortable, we’ll move them as we work!
Do I start face up or face down? 🙃
It depends on what your primary areas of focus will be and your therapist’s flow through a session, but we’ll always tell you before your session begins!
Do I have to be naked?🫣
We tell our clients to undress to THEIR comfort level. MOST of our clients undress to underpants, but truly, whatever you are comfortable with is perfectly fine. Your modesty will be protected the entire time with proper draping (sheets covering the areas we are not currently working on).
What if the pressure is too much or if I need more?💪
At the beginning of your session, we have a quick chat where we can talk about your goals for the session. We strive to deliver a 10/10, ‘knock your socks off’ experience where hopefully your tension and stress has melted away (or at least improved tremendously). That said, we WANT to know if the pressure is too much OR not enough. Please, HELP US meet that 10/10✨ goal! If you’re unsure of how it sounds to actually say this to your therapist, you can say something like. “I could use a little more pressure,” or “maybe just a little lighter pressure, please.” A true professional will adjust, then ask you if the adjusted pressure is right.
What if I only want to have my therapist work on my back and shoulders (or feet, or legs, etc) for the full hour?🤔
At that same intake, when we talk about goals, we go over what makes the most sense for your session to build a plan together. We love our line of work so an opportunity that allows us to spend a longer amount of time in our craft on a particular area is gold!
What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release (MFR) is a technique that works to release adhesions in the connective tissues throughout your muscles. It’s relatively gentle but is also targeted and can feel very focused on those specific adhesions.
What are hot rocks?🪨
You’ve likely seen a beautiful photo of a person lying on a table with flowers and stones placed down their spine. This isn’t what WE mean, when we say Hot Stone Massage. We use Basalt Stones (natural and smooth) that are heated to a controlled temperature and incorporate them INTO the session in a way that delivers heat and a little additional pressure to sore and tense muscles. Working with stones in hand, we begin working in an area until the rocks have cooled, then move into ‘regular’ massage. Muscles respond nicely when they’ve been warmed up a bit first :)
What if I don’t want my Massage Therapist to talk to me?🗣️
Some people have a hard time relaxing with too much silence so they almost NEED to talk through their session. Others, are asleep before I even walk in the door! lol I promise, it’s never a problem! Again, our goal is to deliver a 10/10 experience! I always cover this during that little pre-session chat. I wont initiate any conversation during your session, I’ll encouraging you to take the space as you need to rest and relax your mind and body. With the exception being that I will check in a time or two about pressure to make sure that we have that about right. BUT if you talk to me, I will absolutely talk to you :)
What if I’m not the weight I want to be yet?😐
I realize that we all generally have an idea of what we think we should look like but that really doesn’t come into play with massage. If you have a muscular system, you’re all set and ready! To my absolutely core, I fully believe that no matter your body image, you will be met and cared for with dignity, respect, and professionalism. That’s my promise! The logistics (that I am occasionally asked about) are this: we have 3 different massage tables at the studio. All are made from hard woods and are capable of supporting anywhere from up to 500-800lbs. We have all sorts of table bolsters and pillows to offer support while you are on the table in whatever position (side-lying, on your back, or on your tummy).
What if I didn’t shave my legs?🦵
Girl, me either. Also, a little leg hair ( or even a lot) isn’t going to prevent your session from its intended benefits. I promise, we don’t care and we absolutely do not judge.
I hope this was helpful! But truly, if you have any others just know that we are MORE than happy to field them!
Hope to see you soon!
