Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors used by someone to establish power and control over another person in a relationship. Domestic violence sometimes follows a cyclical pattern in which there are periods of calm, building up of tension, and then abuse. After a period of abuse, batterers are often apologetic, but as the cycle repeats the abuse usually gets worse over time. If abusers recognize that their behavior is wrong and sincerely want to change the way they act, they can get help through batterer’s intervention programs, therapy, and spiritual counseling.

Domestic violence has a hugely negative impact on a wide variety of people. It used to be the norm to define domestic violence as only men physically assaulting their wives, but the true definition has always been broader. Expanding public understanding of what domestic violence is matters because such narrow depictions prevent those who do not fit the stereotype from coming forward to report their victimization.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV)'s mission is to lead, mobilize and raise our voices to support efforts that demand a change of conditions that lead to domestic violence such as patriarchy, privilege, racism, sexism, and classism. We are dedicated to supporting survivors and holding offenders accountable and supporting advocates.
Read more on their incredible work, particularly Project Opal, the joining together of the National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) toward a bold vision for the future that can change the landscape for survivors in ways we cannot effectively perform as two separate organizations.
NCADV is the voice of victims and survivors. We are the catalyst for changing society to have zero tolerance for domestic violence. We do this by affecting public policy, increasing understanding of the impact of domestic violence, and providing programs and education that drive that change.

Yes toxic relationships are hard but do you know what else is hard? Your first
healthy relationship after a toxic one.
No one talks about how hard it is to unlearn all the toxic behaviors you adapted as coping mechanisms. How hard it is to convince yourself that you're safe now.

The degree to which a person can grow is in direct proportion to the amount of truth they can accept about themselves without running away.

Thankful to be invited to speak on Surviving a Parent's Death. It is the most common form of bereavement that we will all face.
Monica Simpson, Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC, BC-TMH
Are you overcome with feelings of hopelessness and anxiety? Is sadness, anxiety or grief getting in the way of your day-to-day life? Do you feel like you are all alone in your struggles?
You are not alone.
You may be at a point in your life where you recognize it’s time for a change. You may be searching for something more — more contentment, more fulfillment, more peace. Or maybe you’re looking for less — less chaos, less conflict, less pain. Either way, the first step to seeking help is often the hardest, as well as the most important.
Choosing the right therapist is an important decision and a good fit is necessary for progress. Effective therapy brings about growth and change in an atmosphere of safety, trust, and collaboration. My name is Monica Simpson, I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and I help people define and work towards achieving peace and balance; positively impacting their day-to-day interactions, careers and relationships.
