To minimize the risk for a s*xually transmitted infection, ACOG recommends the following:
“1. Know your s*xual partners—The more partners you or your partners have, the higher your risk of getting an STI.
2. Use a latex or polyurethane condom—Using a latex or polyurethane condom every time you have vaginal, oral, or a**l s*x reduces the risk of infection.
3. Know that some s*x practices increase the risk—Sexual acts that tear or break the skin carry a higher risk of STIs. A**l s*x poses a high risk because tissues in the re**um break easily. Body fluids can also carry STIs. Having any unprotected s*xual contact with an infected person poses a high risk of getting an STI.
4. Get vaccines—Vaccines are available to help protect against hepatitis B and human papillomavirus (HPV).”

Recently, what we’ve been calling Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is now being changed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) to better reflect symptoms and the condition itself. Calling this condition PCOS has oversimplified the symptoms, focusing on cysts, which is only a part of the larger picture of this metabolic disorder. PMOS reflects the bigger picture of patient symptoms including hormone fluctuations as well as changes in weight, skin, mental health, metabolism, and reproduction. If you’re my patient and have concerns about PMOS, I’m happy to talk about them in your next appointment. Request an appointment at the link in my bio.

I’m always open to talking with my patients about their birth plan and finding ways to support their birth plan if at all possible. But at the end of the day, I will always prioritize the health and safety of the mother and baby, even if that means making unexpected changes to the birth plan.

Avoiding spicy food, alcohol, caffeine, and hot drinks can help manage hot flashes. Hormone therapy is another great solution to help manage hot flashes and support you during perimenopause. Menopause and perimenopause can be as physically life-changing as puberty was as a teen, and I love finding ways to support my patients during this time. If you’re experiencing hot flashes, brain fog, changes in the regularity of your period and other perimenopause/menopause symptoms during your 30’s & 40’s, let’s talk and see if we can find solutions to improve your quality of life.

As the weather warms up and we tend to spend more time outside, I like to remind patients that wearing cotton underwear or cotton-lined underwear can help decrease the risk of vaignal infections. If you experience repeated vaginal infections, let’s talk about ways to prevent this from happening. Request an appointment with me or my NP DarNesha at the link in my bio.

I don’t like the term “geriatric pregnancy,” and I’ve never met a patient who did.
