Happy International Women’s Day 🫶

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience, and voices of women everywhere. At Lake Michigan Counseling Services, we’re honored to support women through every season of life.

Matrescence is the word for the profound transition a woman goes through when she becomes a mother. Just how adolescence describes the shift from child to adult, matrescence describes the physical, emotional, hormonal, and neurological transformation into motherhood.

It is one of the largest developmental changes a person can experience after puberty, involving real rewiring of the brain as women adapt to caring for a new life.

Yet many women move through this enormous shift without the simple language for what is happening to them. That’s not right, and we want to join the fight in getting matrescence put in the dictionary.

At Lake Michigan Counseling Services, matrescence is a word we use DAILY. Our clinicians are trained in advanced perinatal counseling and deeply understand the complexity of this transition. Whether the experience feels joyful, overwhelming, identity-shifting, or all of the above, we get it. We are Moms too.

Our location within the Mind Body Baby Collective was intentionally placed to support mothers during this season. With childcare available and a whole community of resources upstairs, the space exists to make this transition a little easier and a lot less isolating.

Motherhood changes everything.

Self-injury is often a quiet struggle carried in deep pain and secrecy. During Self-Injury Awareness Month, we want you to know that we are here. 🧡

At Lake Michigan Counseling Services, our clinicians have experience supporting individuals who are coping with self-harm, helping them understand the pain beneath the behavior and how to find safer ways to navigate overwhelming emotions.

Healing begins when someone truly sees and hears you, and we are here to walk alongside you in that process.

Living with an autoimmune disease can feel invisible, exhausting, and lonely…

If you’re navigating flare ups, fighting to be heard, grieving the body you once had, or just feeling worn down by it all… you do not have to carry that alone.

Nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide are facing an autoimmune condition, yet so many suffer quietly.

At Lake Michigan Counseling Services, our clinicians will sit with you. We will listen. We will validate your experience. We will join you in the frustration. And we will work to understand you deeply. Not just your diagnosis, but your whole story.

Losing a parent early in life is deeply unfair. It’s a grief that arrives before you were meant to carry it. Therapy can help create space to process the loss, reduce the isolation, and support you in learning how to carry something so heavy.

Eating disorders are serious, life-threatening mental health conditions. They affect people of all ages, genders, and body sizes, and they have one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness. Often times, you may not even recognise that your relationship with food is harmful. That’s where we can step in.

Here in West Michigan, there is a significant lack of providers who treat eating disorders—especially for children and adolescents. That gap matters, and it impacts families every day.

At Lake Michigan Counseling Services, we’re proud to have clinicians with experience treating clients with eating disorders. We are committed to offering compassionate, evidence-based care so individuals and families in our community don’t have to navigate this alone.

If you or someone you love is struggling: it is not too late for recovery. Help can make a difference at any stage.

You deserve support.
You deserve care.
You deserve recovery.
