More than 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, there were black people in the Deep South who had no idea they were free. These people were forced to work, violently tortured, and r***d.

Have you found your body type in your ancestors’ photos? I have!

Strong women who were farmers, and nurses, and mothers who grew and fed babies. All sizes have always existed. The media has shifted this narrative, I guess, since advertisements hit printing presses.

Artists who are also passionate about ā€œfinding memoriesā€ - this mother and son duo won the top ArtPrize award for capturing the the memories, guidance, and advice of people nearing the end of life. This is the important kind of work I feel we are missing in our culture, and an example of why I am so passionate about digging these stories out of the past. Over the last century or two we’ve fallen out of touch with storytelling and listening to our elders.

Wow - this is really fascinating. I didn’t realize beauty retouch in old photos was this in-depth.

What I find most interesting about this is that I have seen portrait photography that looks weirdly airbrushed... like there is a real lack of features on the face, and I wasn’t sure why. In reality this could mean they were overly-corrected ... maybe due to an illness or facial growth - or even to try to cover a lot of freckles or wrinkles. Looking for old photo retouches really brings new insight to the life of the person in the photo.

Photographers and cultural critics have long debated the ethics of retouching—even when it took place directly on the negative in the 19th century.
