If you are dealing with pregnancy low back pain, we know it can make your "delightful" 9 months feel like YEARS.

Many of our pregnant patients come to us having already tried many things to help their back pain, including massage, adjustments and just dealing with it.

But, they know they need something else and they worry that this back pain might be horrendous during birth. So, on the recommendation of a friend, finding us on google, suggestions from their midwife or chiropractor, they find us! And, we are so very happy to help them!

At Purple Mountain PT we specialize in resolving pregnancy related lower back and pelvic girdle pain -- with compassion, personalized care and comprehensive treatments designed to resolve your back and pelvic pain while also preparing you for a beautiful labor and delivery.

Our PTs work one-on-one with you, providing compassion, expertise and having fun along the way! It is our goal to resolve your pain, improve your ability to function during this pregnancy and help you you birth with strength and comfort.

🌟What We Do For Our Pregnant Women Who Have Lower Back Pain🌟

💜Hands-on Manual Therapies: If you need to lie on your pregnant belly, you are going to love our pregnancy pillow (shown in the first photo). Our hands-on treatments align your pelvis, release your sore muscles, melt muscle tension, ease pelvic floor tension and calm your mind and body.

💜Personlized Corrective Exercises: Designed for your spine and hips and pelvic floor and back to support better posture, balance, baby position, breathing and comfort.

💜Baby-Friendly Positioning: We want your body and baby to be in amazing position, so you have no back pain and your baby & pushing are smooth as ever! Our specialist PTs guide you through gentle strategies, personalized to your body's ability and needs, to help your baby's position; this also helps reduce birth trauma and perineal tearing.

💜Push Prep Practice: Women tell us they don't know if they are doing it "right". Through individualized coaching, we teach and rehearse pushing positions while we check your pelvic floor tension, breathing, hip position and other factors. We help you figure out what feels best for you, so you can birth with confidence.

💜Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging: This is extra special and included in your treatments. No one else is offering this in Grand Rapids and our patients love it. With ultrasound imaging, you see your muscles at work and can see & learn how to push, breathe, un-tense your pelvic floor, engage your abs and stabilize your low back effectively.
With Ultrasound:
➕️We can measure your diastasis recti (DRA) and you learn corrective exercises for strong core support and abdominal integrity.
➕️You will also visualize your pelvic floor tension in real time and learn how to release these muscles!
➕️Watch your pushing efforts live — discover how to connect with and open your birth passage effectively.

Because we deeply love this work and we are mothers ourselves, our team of dedicated pregnancy & postpartum physical therapists is committed to reducing birth trauma, easing pregnancy back pain, and guiding you toward the birth of your dreams.

If you have low back pain and are pregnant, our comprehensive hands-on + exercise + birth prep treatments are what you need to feel relief. To learn more about how to get started with our PTs, call us at 616-516-4334 and one of our knowledgable team members will be able to answer all your questions. Together we will create your path to a painfree pregnancy & the birth your heart desires. 💕✨

Did you know that Pelvic Organ Prolapse usually does NOT require surgery?

And did you know that Pelvic PT for Prolapse has been shown to reduce bothersome symptoms?

Prolapse is distressing to live with. Often we experience a lot of vaginal or a**l pressure, pain, and have fear of making it worse.

With childbirth, what are the risk of experiencing Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

✔️a high birth weight child
✔️Episiotomy
✔️Perineal Tearing or laceration
✔️Forceps delivery
✔️Vacuum extraction
✔️Shoulder Dystocia

Have you considered that some of these risks are modifiable & preventable? In our Birth Prep physical therapy, we detail what you can do to reduce your risks.

However, if you do experience a pelvic organ prolapse, don't fear, there is help! Research has shown that pelvic floor PT helps!

Specifically, after receiving high quality pelvic PT, women report

🍀Higher quality of life
🍀Reduction in symptoms of prolapse
🍀Improved Pelvic floor muscle function

Because we use real time ultrasound imaging with our treatments, you can see your prolapse and your muscles while they work to support your organs. By pairing this with specific, corrective exercises, you can improve your pelvic floor and deep core performance and reduce prolapse symptoms.

No other clinic in our area is offering the ultrasound imaging or our unique, specialized whole body framework for treating and improving your pelvic organ prolapse. Our PTs use a unique, personalized and comprehensive approach, based on many years' experience of our founder, Dr. Maureen O'Keefe, DPT working within an integrative urogynecology clinic, treating and serving patients who had complex pelvic organ prolapse.

If you have pelvic organ prolapse, you deserve and need the support we offer. Call us at 616-516-4334 to learn more.

✨ Still struggling with low back pain even after trying everything — stretches, adjustments, injections, massage?

Here’s something most people (and even many providers!) overlook: the organs in your abdomen are supported by connective tissues that can get restricted and tug on your spine. This hidden tension can keep your back pain from ever fully resolving.

For example, did you know the uterus has a ligament attaching it to the sacrum? And that any uterine issues, including menstrual cramping, will pull on your sacrum, contributing to chronic SI joint pain?

That’s where visceral manipulation comes in. Our physical therapists are specially trained to gently release these restrictions—helping your body move better, reduce pain, and restore balance.

Our treatment for back pain, using our holistic and personalized framework includes
✔️Visceral Manipulation
✔️Scar Tissue mobilization
✔️Cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral joint mobilization and alignment
✔️Deep Core Training
✔️Motor Control, Posture and Movement Pattern Retraining
✔️Real Time Ultrasound Imaging so you can see your muscles in your back, abdomen and pelvic floor working (or not working) and learn how to correct hese.

👉 Curious if this is the missing piece for your back pain? Purple Mountain PT is a speciality pelvic health, spine and TMJ clinic in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We have patients travel to us from all over the state and beyond due to our unique approach, based in pain neuroscience, clinical guidelines, research supported treatments, clinical experience and our love of helping people feel better. 🤰**"Do I really need PT during pregnancy?"**
We hear this question all the time — and here's the scoop:

Some women feel wonderful during pregnancy and also benefit from our Pregnancy PT and Push Prep Program. This personalized treatment program specifically identifies and teaches each woman how to push, what positions work better for her and how to optimize her perineum to reduce risk for tearing. We also work throughout the pregnancy to optimize the woman's ribs, hips, pelvis, pelvic floor, low back and abdomen so that motor control & strength are ideal and the mom's body provides the baby the space necessary to position itself head-down and in optimal position for birth can be achieved. We use manual therapies, rehabilitative ultrasound imaging, education, perineal massage, heart rate variability training and therapeutic exercises personalized to each person.

Additionally, research has found that the presence of pelvic floor dysfunction is common, even in adolescent athletes. Therefore, when pregnant, often underlying pelvic floor tension, weakness or dysfunction are often present. Treating these can help your baby position better, your body feel better and your birth go more smoothly. Yet, this is only one small part of what our Pregnancy PT addresses.

Pregnancy changes everything about your body — how you move, how you breathe, and how you carry your growing baby. When pregnant often women experience neck & back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, pelvic floor tension, bladder leakage, painful hips when rolling in bed, core weakness, round ligament pain, lumbopelvic pain (p***c pain, tailbone pain, SI joint pain, hip pain, etc) and other musculoskeletal issues. At Purple Mountain PT, we specialize in helping pregnant women feel strong, aligned, and prepared for labor & delivery through hands-on care, rehabilitative ultrasound imaging of pelvic floor & abdominal muscles, patient education and personalized exercise programs.

🌿 We help you:
✅ Reduce pelvic and back pain
✅ Support your abdominal wall & address diastasis recti abdominis
✅ Improve urinary control
✅ Release tension in the pelvic floor
✅ Create more space for baby to get head-down
✅ Practice perineal massage to reduce tearing
✅ Learn push prep strategies that actually work for YOUR body — no more clenching or guessing during labor

Every body is different, and so is every birth. You don’t have to just “deal with it” — we’re here to support you from bump to baby.

One recent patient told us "I tell every woman, if you are going to invest in anything during your pregnancy, do pelvic PT! And do it afterwards! This has made a huge difference in my life."

📞 Curious how we may be able to help you? Give us a call at 616-516-4334 to speak with one of our knowledgable team members to chat about your needs.
You deserve to feel strong, confident, and ready. 💜

So often back problems, hip issues and pelvic floor dysfunction are frustrating to improve.

The inner thighs, with their attachments to the pelvic bone and their role in stabilizing the pelvis with each step we take, play an important role in chronic back pain, hip pain and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Often our patients, before coming to see us, have already tried to improve their back, pelvic floor or hip problems, yet remain with bothersome symptoms.

We are the only specialty pelvic health, spine and TMJ clinic in West Michigan. Our PTs implement a unique whole-body framework when designing a rehabilitation program. It is our goal to provide patients a trauma-informed, personalized and holistic treatment plan that yields durable results.

Some common things we identify that are often overlooked:
🟪 inner thigh weakness, tightness, overuse or facial restrictions
🟪Pelvic floor dysfunction that has been overlooked and is contributing to back pain & hip pain
🟪Visceral & abdominal muscle contributions to ongoing pelvic floor, back and hip dysfunction
🟪Scar tissue, especially in abdominal surgery scars, causing pelvic floor, lower back and hip problems
🟪Muscle imbalances most notable in weakness of hamstrings, inner thighs, hip rotators and glutes and compensations or overuse of hip flexors, pelvic floor and sometimes inner thighs.
🟪Ribcage & thoracic spine dysfunction, especially stiffness and impaired diaphragmatic capacity and function contributing to ongoing pelvic floor, spine and hip issues.
🟪Postural and movement pattern dysfunction caused by various points of weakness, fascial restrictions, deep core deficiency and habits. These contribute to ongoing back, pelvic floor and hip problems.

By taking a whole body approach and combining hands-on manual therapies with corrective exercises, whole body vibration balance & posture training, rehabilitative ultrasound imaging and personslized treatments, we find joy in helping you on your path to feeling great again!

Can we honor and celebrate Women and our contribution to making the world go round?

Womens health, we all are aware, has been an after thought in NIH funding, decades of research and in our sociological framework.

The truth is that women experience greater risk of life long problems related to pelvic health injuries. These problems reduce our quality of life and can impair our confidence and ability to stay fit and active.

We also, often, neglect to commit to working out, because we are taking care of everyone & everything else.

It’s crucial to have our bodies functioning at top form.

What are some things you can do for yourself?
☘️ Prioritize your mind, body and spirit with preparation during pregnancy, including push prep, pelvic floor care, and abdominal wall & spine health
☘️ Be committed to postpartum rehabilitation. Don’t just think it will all magically get back perfectly fine. You need to do the work.
☘️Know your menstrual cycle, thyroid, sleep quality & glucose levels. Be proactive with optimizing and fixing all of these. Don’t hesitate.
☘️Perimenopause & menopause exacerbate pelvic floor, bladder, bowel & musculoskeletal problems. See your pelvic PT and take action.
☘️ Maintain ideal body weight by eating for nourishment and developing muscles, mobility & cardiovascular health.
☘️Jump and move quickly at every age, so you build bone and reaction time to reduce risk for falls and fracture.
☘️See your pelvic health PT annually for a check up & commit to tune-ups with PT as soon as symptoms arise.

What would you add to this list?

☘️Peace,
Dr Maureen O’Keefe, DPT and the Purple Mountain PT Team
