🗣️ Encouraging Communication Through Everyday Moments

Building communication skills doesn’t always require a therapy session—you can support language and interaction during everyday routines!

🔹 Narrate What You’re Doing
Whether you're cooking, getting dressed, or packing a bag—talk through it! “I’m pouring the juice into your cup.”

🔹 Pause for Responses
Ask simple questions or give choices, then pause—this gives your child space to respond. “Do you want apples or crackers?” (Wait and watch.)

🔹 Use Gestures and Visuals
Pair words with gestures or pictures to help understanding and expression.

🔹 Expand on Their Words
If your child says “car,” you can respond with, “Yes, that’s a red car!” to model longer phrases.

💡 Pro Tip: Follow your child’s lead. If they’re interested in something, that’s your chance to model new words in context.

➡️ Rebound Therapies supports communication development through individualized ABA plans. Ask us how we can help strengthen your child’s voice—whatever form it takes.

🧺 Helping Your Child Build Independence Through Daily Tasks

Building independence is one of the most empowering things we can support in a child’s life. ABA therapy often focuses on breaking down daily routines into manageable steps so kids can learn and succeed.

🔹 Start Small:
Pick one task—like brushing teeth, setting the table, or putting on shoes.

🔹 Use Visual or Written Checklists:
Help your child remember steps and feel ownership of the task.

🔹 Offer Choices:
“Do you want to put on your socks or shirt first?” Choices increase motivation!

🔹 Reinforce Effort, Not Just Results:
Celebrate progress—even if the task isn’t perfect yet.

💡 Pro Tip: Use backward chaining! Teach the last step first so your child experiences success right away.

💫 Why Kids Stim and What It Means

Have you noticed your child flapping their hands, spinning, or repeating sounds? These are called self-stimulatory behaviors—or stimming—and they’re a normal part of how many people, including those with autism, interact with the world.

🔹 What Is Stimming?
Stimming includes repetitive movements or sounds like rocking, jumping, lining up toys, or humming.

🔹 Why It Happens:
✔️ Helps regulate emotions (calm, excitement, stress)
✔️ Provides comfort in overwhelming situations
✔️ Offers sensory input that feels good

🔹 Should I Be Concerned?
Not necessarily! Stimming isn’t always something that needs to be stopped. It’s only addressed if it interferes with learning, causes harm, or prevents meaningful interactions.

💡 Pro Tip: Instead of trying to eliminate stimming, ask:

Is my child overwhelmed or under-stimulated?

Can I offer a safe, alternative activity to meet that need?

➡️ Our BCBAs at Rebound Therapies help families understand the “why” behind behaviors and create plans that support emotional regulation.

🔄 Supporting Transitions with First/Then Boards

Transitions between activities can be tough for many children, especially those with autism. One simple, effective tool to ease those moments is a First/Then board.

🔹 What Is It?
A First/Then board shows what’s happening now and what’s coming next—using words or visuals.
Example: First: Brush Teeth 🪥 → Then: Watch a Show 📺

🔹 Why It Helps:
✔️ Provides structure and reduces anxiety
✔️ Makes expectations clear
✔️ Offers motivation for completing non-preferred tasks

🔹 How to Use It:

Keep it simple—just one task at a time

Use preferred activities as the “Then” to encourage participation

Follow through every time for consistency

💡 Pro Tip: Laminate your board and use Velcro for reusable icons that can be changed daily!

➡️ Need help creating a custom First/Then board for your routine? We can help you design one that works at home and in therapy.

🚽 5 Signs Your Child May Be Ready for Potty Training

Wondering if it’s time to start potty training? Every child is different, but here are some common signs to watch for:

Stays dry for longer periods (2 hours at a time)

Can follow simple directions like “sit down” or “go get your shoes”

Shows interest in the bathroom or imitates others

Can pull pants up and down with some help

Tells you (verbally or non-verbally) when they’re wet or soiled

Starting potty training when your child shows signs of readiness can make the process smoother for everyone.

💡 Pro Tip: Not sure where to start? Pair early signs with short, low-pressure potty sits using music or a favorite toy.

➡️ Our BCBAs at Rebound Therapies can help build a potty training plan that fits your child’s needs.

National Nurses Week

At AdvisaCare, we’re lucky to work alongside some of the most dedicated, skilled, and compassionate nurses in the field.

They’re the ones holding hands during hard moments, advocating when no one else does, and showing up when others step back.

To every nurse on our team—and across the care community—thank you.
Not just this week. Every day.

You are seen. You are valued. And you make all the difference.

⭐ Using Positive Reinforcement in Everyday Life ⭐
Positive reinforcement isn’t just for therapy—it’s a powerful tool parents and caregivers can use every day to encourage helpful behaviors and build confidence.

🔹 What Is It?
Positive reinforcement means rewarding a behavior you want to see more often—with praise, high-fives, favorite activities, or special items.

🔹 How to Use It Daily:
✔️ Praise your child for following directions (“Nice job cleaning up your toys!”)
✔️ Give a reward for trying something new (“You tried a bite of broccoli—awesome! Let’s watch your favorite show.”)
✔️ Celebrate effort, not just results (“You worked really hard on that puzzle!”)

🔹 Why It Works:
It helps kids feel successful, builds trust, and makes learning new skills more enjoyable.

💡 Pro Tip: Be specific with your praise! Instead of “Good job,” say, “Great job putting on your shoes all by yourself!”

✔️ Use simple icons or real-life photos
✔️ Include each step: wake up, brush teeth, get dressed, breakfast, etc.
✔️ Walk through it with your child each morning
✔️ Celebrate completed tasks with a sticker or praise!
Visual schedules support independence, reduce anxiety, and help children start the day with confidence.
💡 Pro Tip: Laminate your schedule or use Velcro for easy reuse and updates.

🧩 The Power of Visual Schedules in Daily Routines 🧩
Consistency and structure are key for many children, especially those with autism. That’s where visual schedules come in!
🔹 What Is a Visual Schedule?
A visual schedule is a set of pictures or icons that represent daily tasks or steps in a routine—like getting dressed, brushing teeth, or transitioning to therapy.
🔹 Why They Work
Visual schedules help reduce anxiety, improve independence, and make transitions smoother by letting children know what to expect.
🔹 How to Use Them
Start with a simple routine (like morning or bedtime). Use real pictures or icons and place the schedule somewhere visible. Reference it often and celebrate completed tasks!
🔹 Examples of Visual Schedules
🖼️ Morning routine
🖼️ Potty training steps
🖼️ Therapy session breakdown
🖼️ Going to the store or doctor
💡 Pro Tip: If your child resists changes in routine, use a “First/Then” board to help ease the transition:
“First brush teeth, then story time!”
➡️ Want help setting up a visual schedule that fits your child’s needs? Our team at Rebound Therapies can help create one that works at home and in therapy.
