Dear patients, parents, and guardians,

After much contemplation and reflection, it is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement from active medical practice, effective 9 July 2025. It has been a great pleasure servicing your health care needs and I am grateful for all the rewarding experiences and relationships I have built over the years. I would like to thank and acknowledge my staff who have worked with me through the years to respond to your needs. The last day that I will see patients will be 8 July 2025. I will continue to provide medical care for you prior to this closing date, so please call to schedule if desired.

With the goal of providing continued allergy care for you with a seamless transition I have entered into an agreement with Allergy Associates of Western Michigan (www.allergywestmi.com) to assume the care of my patients. They have an office at 1600 East Beltline N.E. as well as in Grandville. Drs. Thomas Miller MD and Erica Palmisano MD have been providing excellent Allergy/Asthma/Immunology care to the Grand Rapids area for many years, aided by Erin Gibson, PA-C. Allergy Associates accepts most insurances, check with your plan or call their office to confirm coverage.

If you would like to have your records transferred elsewhere, let us know prior to 30 June 2025 to allow for processing time to have the records forwarded from our office. After July 8, all records will be with Allergy Associates of Western Michigan (616) 531-6900, (3185 Macatawa SW Ste B, Grandville, MI 49418). Please note Labwork done via one of the major local hospital networks should already be available via your MyChart or similar apps.

Our website, www.MyAllergyAsthma.com, will have additional helpful information during this transition.

Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for trusting me with your health care needs over the years. It has been a pleasure caring for you. I wish you continued health and happiness in the future.

Dr Vince

Mid-August marks the start of Ragweed Pollen season. Ragweed is one of the most allergic weeds, causing sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, irritated eyes for millions of people around the world. Ragweed allergy is the number 1 cause of fall “hay-fever”, pollinating from mid August into October. Each plant makes as many as 1 billion small, light, pollen grains that can travel up to 400 miles under the right conditions. “Short” ragweed (see photo) is the most common locally. Expect to see more plants along the sides of roads over the next few weeks, typically anywhere from ankle to knee high, with pollenating “fingers” pointing up. Some people experience Itchy mouth eating fresh melons due to a cross-reactive allergen/protein shared between ragweed pollen and melons, that typically doesn’t cause severe food allergic reactions.

NEFFY, a Nasal Spray EPINEPHRINE option, was recently approved by the FDA. Looks like it won't be available in pharmacies for at least a couple months, and for a weight of 66+ lbs., like a 0.3mg EPI autoinjector (although apparently a smaller version is being studied, like a 0.15mg EPI autoinjector dose). This is a major development in treatment options for patients who are at risk for severe, life-threatening allergic reactions, especially patients who are very hesitant to use an Epi Autoinjector even when having significant symptoms. Initial studies look good regarding how well the nasal form gets into the blood stream compared to an EPI injector, with some exceptions. Once it starts being used by multiple patients, with time we'll have more information to better assess.

The FDA approved the first nasal spray for the emergency treatment of allergic reactions in adult and certain pediatric patients.
