The best screening test is the one people are actually willing to do.

Options now include:

Traditional colonoscopy (still the gold standard)

FIT and stool-based DNA tests

New FDA-approved blood-based screening tests like Shield, offering a highly accurate, noninvasive option.

This kind of innovation is critical for improving access, compliance, and early detection.

Here’s the concerning reality:

📊 Colon cancer death rates are rising in adults under 55, increasing by about 1% per year since the mid-2000s.

🧓 Meanwhile, death rates in adults over 55 have dropped for decades, thanks to screening.

🧠 Even more concerning: since the mid-1990s, there has been a 2% annual increase in colorectal cancer cases among adults aged 20–39.

Experts believe the rise in early-onset colorectal cancer may be linked to:

More sedentary lifestyles

Increased processed food and red meat consumption

Less fiber and plant-based nutrition

Environmental and lifestyle factors we’re only beginning to fully understand

Most major guidelines recommend beginning routine colon cancer screening at age 45. You may need to start earlier if you have:

A family history of colorectal cancer or polyps

Certain genetic syndromes

Inflammatory bowel disease or other high-risk conditions

👉 Screening isn’t one-size-fits-all. Talk with your healthcare provider to determine the best starting point and method for you.

Some screening tests can detect precancerous polyps, small growths, that have the potential to turn into cancer over time. When these polyps are found and removed early:

The risk of cancer drops dramatically

You can prevent disease instead of just treating it

That’s why screening is one of the most powerful public health tools we have.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers if it’s caught early. And thanks to advances in screening technology, there are now more ways than ever to detect it before it becomes a threat.

Unfortunately, many people delay screening often because they don’t feel at risk, or because the process seems intimidating. But the numbers tell a different story.

Early Detection = Better Outcomes. When colon cancer is found at an early stage:

✅ Treatment is more effective

🧬 Survival rates are significantly higher

🩹 Recovery can be less intensive

That’s the power of screening. It’s not just about finding cancer, it’s about finding precancerous changes and stopping cancer before it starts.

Starting in 2026, more people will be able to access catastrophic health insurance plans through the federal marketplace. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) says these plans provide all essential health benefits, focus on financial protection, and may be a more affordable path for those who are ineligible for premium tax credits or cost-sharing reductions.

What this means for you at Seeds of Health Direct Primary Care:
✅ Access to preventive services without cost-sharing under these plans.
✅ A chance to pair this insurance option with our relationship-based care model, helping you stay ahead of health issues rather than reacting.
✅ Opportunity to talk to us about how this could impact your membership or how we support patients under different insurance arrangements.

If you’re wondering what this means for your family, your finances, or your access to the kind of care you deserve — let’s have that conversation. We’re committed to ensuring you understand your options and can make the best choice for your health and your budget.
