I hypothesize that in each patient, kink(s) in the neck inhibited the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid out of the skull and down the spine; this created excess pressure in the fourth ventricle, causing abnormal function of some of the structures in the midbrain. It also inhibited the flow of blood into the occipital area of the brain by kinking one of the vertebral arteries. Additionally, I suggest that the posterior atlas irritated the anterolateral aspect of the brainstem, irritating any combination of the bottom seven cranial nerves.
Dr Burcon is the only doctor that has presented at every international Meniere's seminar over the past twenty-five years, including the Barany Society Meeting in Seoul, Korea, the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, the Prosper Meniere Society in Austria, the Politzer Society at Cleveland Clinic and the International Symposiums on Meniere’s Disease in Kyoto, Japan and Rome, Italy in 2015.
To test Dr. Burcon’s theory, a two and one half million-dollar grant by the Italian government sponsored a study done at the oldest teaching hospital in Europe. It was done in Rome in 2016 conducted by the Pope’s otolaryngologist on two groups of thirty Meniere's patients and one on MS patients. The posterior blood flow on the involved side was reduced by an average of 40%! When tested, upper cervical corrections done in the local hospital proved equally successful at improving the flow of blood and CSF as brain surgery.
