🎹 Celebrating International Volunteer Day! 🌟

Meet Cheryl Sisco, a shining example of how volunteering keeps meaningful connections alive. After retiring from Trinity Health Grand Rapids in 2023 following 43 years of dedicated service as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner, Cheryl returned to share her gift of music with patients and guests.

You’ll often find Cheryl at the grand piano in the lobby of Trinity Health Lacks Cancer Center, filling the space with beautiful melodies and spiritual hymns that bring comfort and joy. Many patients and families even sing along, creating unforgettable moments of hope and healing.

Cheryl says, “Saint Mary’s will always be a part of me, and volunteering is a way to keep this meaningful connection.” 💙

✨ Open Hands, Full Heart – Thank You, Donna Betten! ✨

During our Gratitude Gathering on December 2, Donna Betten shared her incredible journey of healing and giving. From growing up in Zimbabwe to building a life in Michigan, Donna’s story is one of faith, resilience, and community.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids has been part of every chapter—from welcoming her children and grandchildren to walking alongside her during breast cancer treatment. Donna reminds us that healing begins with hope and openness: “There are two ways to go through something like cancer—with deep fear and sadness, or with openness. I chose to walk through it with my hands open.”

Her decades of volunteering, philanthropy, and leadership on the Saint Mary’s Foundation board reflect her commitment to being “part of something bigger than yourself.”

🌟 “Like a New Patient” – Taylor’s Story of Hope and Healing 🌟

At just 18, Taylor Hyma’s life changed overnight when unexplained seizures took over her world. Months of fear and isolation followed—until she met Dr. Hussam Shaker at Trinity Health Medical Group.

After extensive testing, Taylor faced a decision few teenagers ever imagine: major brain surgery. Today, thanks to her care team, she’s been seizure-free for over a year and a half, regained her independence, and is thriving again. 💙

Taylor says: “Although you have something going on in your life… it’s totally possible to still be doing your dreams. We just need to find people who can be there for us… and find amazing doctors like Dr. Shaker.”
