A list of things you don't actually need permission for, but in case you're waiting for it anyway:

Permission to rest before you've earned it.
Permission to say "I changed my mind."
Permission to outgrow a friendship without a fight.
Permission to be a beginner at something at 35. Or 55.

You don't need anyone's permission, really. But here it is anyway.
Tape it to the fridge if you need to.

Therapy isn't a TED Talk. It shouldn't sound like one either.

Some of the most useful things I've said in session aren't profound. They're not framed quotes. They're not in a textbook. They're just honest reactions to what someone is telling me.

A few of them, lately:

"You can be angry with your mom and love her in the same breath. Both can be true."

"That sounds exhausting. I'm tired just listening to it."

"I don't think you're being dramatic. I think you're being honest for the first time in a while."

"What if it's not your job to fix it?"

"Yeah, that's a him problem, not a you problem."

"I would also be furious."

If your therapist sounds like a self-help book, something's off. You should be able to feel like a person in there. Not a project.

(These are mine, by the way. Every clinician at Brave has their own voice. If mine isn't your speed, one of them probably is.)

There's a version of starting therapy that lives in a lot of people's heads; the one where you walk in with a clear list of what's wrong, a goal, and a printed-out journal entry to hand the therapist on day one.

That's not a real thing. Nobody starts therapy that way.

You're allowed to come in with "something feels off and I can't name it." You're allowed to not know what kind of therapy you want. You're allowed to have never tried meditation or journaling or a single self-help podcast. You're allowed to not be in crisis.

Figuring it out is the whole point. That's our job.
