Dr. Thomas M. Aaberg, Jr founded Retina Specialists of Michigan in January 2009 to provide comprehensive retinal service, guided by the belief that patient care should be expert, efficient and personable. One year later, Dr. Scott Westhouse returned home to West Michigan, and joined the Retina Specialists’ team.
From humble beginnings, our practice has expanded rapidly — a testament to the quality of care provided by our team of physicians and staff who embody these ideals. In 2014, we doubled in size when two more doctors joined us: Dr. Nathan Pezda who completed his fellowship training in Toronto before moving to Grand Rapids, and Dr. Liliya Shevchenko who finished her fellowship training with our practice that same year.
Our doctors are committed to providing the best surgical care, aiding in the advancement of medicine through our involvement in clinical research trials, and advocating for our patients. With the addition of Dr. Shevchenko, our practice brings expertise to the specialized field of retinal degeneration and dystrophies. We are also the only ophthalmology practice in the area to specialize in ocular oncology. Our physicians operate clinics in Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon, and Big Rapids to better serve our community and the greater West Michigan region.
A new chapter
Opened in February of 2015, our new state-of-the-art facility located on Cascade Road in Grand Rapids was truly designed with our patient in mind — even down to the most minute of details. We intentionally employed LEAN design principles to plan and curate an intuitive and unique patient experience while simultaneously creating an innovative medical space to balance the needs of the business as well—a common challenge many traditional offices struggle to achieve. Our new facility has reduced wasted time and motion, reduced clinic wait time, and greatly increased patient satisfaction scores.
From our certified ophthalmic technicians, scribes and photographers to our highly skilled physicians, we trust you’ll receive efficient, high quality and compassionate care throughout your visit with us. We are confident you’ll feel heard and cared for by the outstanding ophthalmic team at Retina Specialists of Michigan.
