Yes! Hospice is compassionate care that helps patients and families live life as fully as possible. To me, hospice focuses more on living than dying.

This looks like a wonderful free workshop for those who are grieving and anticipating the upcoming holidays.

Rewriting the Holidays After Loss is a free workshop designed to help you explore your grief, values, traditions, and support systems as you navigate the holiday season. You'll have the opportunity to create your own unique intentions, as what’s right for each person is different. This workshop will provide a framework to help you craft a personalized guide for surviving and finding meaning in the holidays. Participants will receive a workbook filled with writing and reflection prompts to support this process. The workshop will be facilitated by Litsa Williams, MA, LCSW-C, co-founder of What’s Your Grief.

Today I was honored to receive a Volunteer of the Year Award at Emmanuel Hospice, where I provide support through helping with legacy projects, providing companionship to patients, and making bereavement phone calls. Being present with others at the end of life helps bring into focus the things that matter in life, like love and connection. Although my visits are not always easy, overall it feels like an honor to be a compassionate witness and companion during a sacred time.

Sharing this article by Dr. Kathryn Mannix, a favorite end of life educator and retired palliative care physician. Love this line: “It’s time to reclaim that forgotten wisdom [about dying]. We can welcome medical progress, but it should not deprive people of the chance to live the last part of their lives away from the harms of intrusive medical interventions of dubious personal benefit. Unless we talk about dying, we can’t talk about how to live the way we want to as death approaches.”

I would love to help facilitate a conversation around end of life wishes and have been trained as a Respecting Choices advance care planning facilitator. Please reach out if I can help!

I haven’t read this newer booklet by Barbara but I love her other booklets on end of life topics. And, I’ve observed that dynamics around eating at the end of life are often an area of tension and stress…it’s so hard to watch our loved ones eat less and less, and yet it is a natural part of the dying process. I look forward to reading Barbara’s latest; her educational resources on end of life topics are accessible and written with compassion!

I missed National Death Doula day last week, but thought I’d send out this reminder of what a death doula (or end-of-life doula) is! There are about 1,600 of us registered with the National End of Life Doula Alliance, and many more that embody these skills, traits, and knowledge about end of life.

Take a listen to this interview with Alua Arthur to learn more about what a death doula does!

Alua Arthur helps people plan for death. A big part of her work is helping them reconcile the lives they lived with the lives they might have wanted. Her memoir is called Briefly Perfectly Human.

Hi local friends, come hear me present at Gilda’s Club on how a doula can provide support during a cancer journey. This event is open to the public and you have the option to view over zoom from your home with registration. I’ll also be talking more generally about what an end-of-life doula is and how our profession came to be. Come with your questions!

Please watch this short video by Dr. Kathryn Mannix explaining why we should be talking about dying. Avoiding talking about death often creates more anxiety, fear, and isolation for our loved ones. Can we become more comfortable using the d-word?
