SELF-INJURY MYTH BUSTER

Myth: “If they wanted to stop, they would.”
Truth: Self-harm can become a learned coping cycle
When emotional pain builds and relief follows the behavior, the brain reinforces it.
This is why skill-based therapy matters.

At Adolescent & Family Behavioral Health Services, we teach replacement skills that help individuals tolerate distress safely and effectively.
There is a path forward.

SELF INJURY AWARENESS MONTH - PARENTS

If you discover your child is self-harming:
Pause.
Breathe.
Stay connected.
Punishment increases secrecy.
Shame increases risk.
Connection increases safety.

Try:
“I’m here. Help me understand what this is doing for you.”
“We’ll figure this out together.”
Professional support matters. Early intervention matters.

🧡 DBT & EMOTIONAL REGULATION

Self-harm behaviors don’t start with the injury. They start with emotional overwhelm.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) teaches:
• Distress tolerance
• Emotional regulation
• Mindfulness
• Interpersonal effectiveness

DBT is not about “just stopping the behavior.” It’s about building the internal capacity to manage the emotions that drive the urge. When emotions are regulated, the urge often decreases.

🧡 EDUCATION: What Self-Injury Really Is

Self-injury is rarely about “attention.” More often, it is about:
• Regulating overwhelming emotions
• Releasing internal pressure
• Feeling something when numb
• Communicating pain that feels unspeakable

Many individuals who self-harm are not trying to die. They are trying to COPE.

At Adolescent & Family Behavioral Health Services, this is a specialty area of care. We approach self-injury through trauma-informed, culturally responsive treatment that focuses on emotional regulation and skill-building.

Healing begins with understanding.

🌱 **Resilient Roots DBT Program – Now Enrolling for March!**

At **Resilient Roots Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (RR-DBT)**, we are committed to empowering African American youth with tools that strengthen emotional resilience, confidence, and coping skills.

Resilient Roots, a program of **Adolescent & Family Behavioral Health Services (AFBHS)**, is a culturally focused, evidence-based Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program designed for youth ages **7–13** who are experiencing significant emotional or behavioral challenges.

Research shows DBT programs have some of the **highest completion rates** among therapeutic interventions — and we are passionate about making this life-changing support accessible to our community.

We also cannot ignore this reality:
African American youth ages 5–12 are **twice as likely to die by su***de** than their White peers.

Resilient Roots exists to be a **protective factor** — equipping children and families with skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness in a culturally affirming space.

✨ **Affordability is NOT a barrier.**
We are committed to ensuring families can participate.

We are proud to partner with **Women On The MUV, Inc.** and **Baxter Community Center** to expand access and impact in our community.

📅 Groups begin in **March**.
Spots are limited.

If you know a family who could benefit from this program, please share this post with them.
