The Fountain Hill Center

The Fountain Hill Center The Fountain Hill Center is a nonprofit collective of over a dozen licensed, independent therapists.

We provide individual, couples, family, and group counseling from two locations in West Michigan. The Fountain Hill Center was founded in 1975 by Central Reformed Church in Grand Rapids as "The Marriage and Family Center" by a group of lay members who believed that if the Church was to take "caring" seriously, it needed to create a counseling center that would serve both the congregation of Central and the greater Grand Rapids community. Andy Atwood, then working at Central as a part-time Minister to Singles, became the Center's first and founding staff member and began offering counseling services from the first floor of The Bundy House, a historic home located in the Heritage Hill neighborhood of Grand Rapids. In 1986, the Center's operations expanded to the second floor of The Bundy House, and in 1991, with the help of a generous and supportive donor, The Marriage and Family Center was able to purchase the entire house from Central Reformed Church for use as a counseling center. In 1996, The Marriage and Family Center changed its name to The Fountain Hill Center for Counseling and Consultation. Today, over a dozen therapists and interns provide counseling services from The Bundy House and a secondary office located in New Era, MI, which opened in 2002. As a Center, we work together to hone our counseling practices and put our vocations to work responding to the mental health and wellness needs of our clients, neighborhoods, and West Michigan community.

Staying sober on St. Patrick's Day can be challenging due to the holiday's association with drinking, but, with the right planning and support, it is possible to celebrate the day without alcohol.

Here are some tips to help you stay sober on St. Patrick's Day:
☘ Plan Ahead: Identify potential triggers and develop strategies to avoid or handle them. Let friends and family know about your sobriety goals to set expectations and gain support.
☘ Host a Sober Celebration: Create a festive atmosphere at home with an Irish-themed meal and non-alcoholic drink options.
☘ Replace Drinking Traditions: Organize activities like scavenger hunts or attend a parade.
☘ Wear green & rock some shamrocks!
☘ Attend Support Group Meetings: Reinforce your commitment to sobriety by attending support group meetings before or after your celebrations.
☘ Seek Support: Reach out to your sober community or attend a support group meeting for extra encouragement and accountability.

Keep in mind, St. Patrick's Day is just another holiday, but it can also be just another day. You get to decide on if you celebrate and in what ways.

This week is National Drug & Alcohol Facts week and it's time to talk with your kids about the risks and dangers of substance use.

MYTH: “Talking to my kids about drugs or alcohol will just make them more curious.”
FACT: Studies from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) prove that open, honest conversations actually help protect kids from risky choices.

Here’s how you can make a difference today:
🔸Ask what they’re hearing at school
🔸Listen with empathy and without judgment
🔸Share real, science-based facts
🔸Keep the conversation going - one talk isn’t enough

Let’s replace myths with facts. Get tools to start the conversation at:

📣 Big news: Our CASA services are expanding into Mason County next month, helping ensure even more children in the foster care and court system have a trained advocate by their side.

Appointed by a judge, CASA volunteers spend time getting to know the child and their unique needs — at home, at school, and in placement — and advocate for their safety, stability, and well-being in court. They become a steady, supportive presence for a child whose world may be constantly changing.

Our trained CASA volunteers work with families, caseworkers, schools, and service providers to make sure every child’s voice is heard and their best interests come first.

Reach out to one of our directors for more information, or to start your volunteer journey today.
