In 2017 I stopped my son from being rewarded for his 100% attendance. This year a different son's report warned his attendance 'needed improvement’. Neither were rewarded or punished because, whether good or bad, their school attendance wasn't under their control.

Also because in our family:
• We don’t reward luck* (good health) or demonise sickness
• 100% attendance awards exclude and vilify the most vulnerable
• Inclusion and community are more important than performance and productivity

Identifying children who are sick as a problem holds back the aspirations of an inclusive community.

Wondering when attendance awards work? Check out our flow chart.
In summary - they don't.

Staying active is critical to mental health.

Feelings are like rain, sometimes it’s just misting while other times it’s a full downpour.

Feelings are like rain, sometimes it’s just misting while other times it’s a full downpour.

Feelings are like rain - part of the ever-changing weather.

R - recognize. What is this feeling?
A - accept. This feeling is already here.
I - investigate. What is the feeling wanting me to know?
N - non-identification. I can experience a feeling without it defining me.

This! This is so important, managing strong or difficult emotions does not have to equate to calmness.

Many of us believe that if we can remain calm no matter what and teach our children to do the same then we have successfully mastered self-regulation. But true regulation has nothing to do with achieving a certain state. It's in noticing and responding to whatever emotion you are feeling.

Children aren’t born with the ability to understand and manage emotions. They learn those skills as they grow…and our Creative Coping family workshop series can help them get started. In this 6-program series, kids and parents make fun art projects together while exploring identity, self-awareness, and emotional expression. Learn more and register at https://bit.ly/3pPdZfl.

"John Gottman from the Gottman Institute has done extensive research regarding relationships and what makes them happy.

One of the more interesting findings is about the magic ratio. After examining couples and how they dealt with conflict, it seemed that happy couples for who love lasts show five positive interactions for each negative one.

[...]So, let’s say there is a conflict between a couple where one criticizes the other. Then, to resolve this conflict they can try positive interactions, which for example are showing empathy, apologizing, being affectionate, showing appreciation or interest."
