Ever notice you start coughing the moment you step outside in this cold? You're not alone ❄️🫁
Cold air is a common trigger for coughing and breathing issues - even for people who don't usually have problems.
Here's what's actually happening:
THE SCIENCE:
Your airways are lined with warm, moist tissue. When frigid air hits them:
▫️Blood vessels constrict rapidly
▫️Airways narrow to protect themselves
▫️Mucus production kicks into overdrive
Result = coughing, wheezing, chest tightness
This happens to everyone to some degree, but it's especially problematic for:
▫️People with asthma
▫️Those with COPD or chronic bronchitis
▫️Children (smaller airways react faster)
▫️Anyone exercising outdoors
PROTECT YOUR LUNGS THIS POLAR VORTEX:
✅ Breathe through your nose when possible (it warms the air naturally)
✅ Wrap a scarf loosely over your nose and mouth
✅ Keep your rescue inhaler WARM - cold temps can make it less effective
✅ Limit outdoor exposure when temps drop below 10°F
✅ Warm up slowly when coming back inside
⚠️ WHEN TO SEEK CARE:
❗Wheezing that doesn't improve after warming up
❗Chest tightness or pain that persists
❗Shortness of breath that continues indoors
❗Using your rescue inhaler more than usual
