๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Attention Grand Rapids Residents! ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

The City of Grand Rapids is seeking your input to help shape the future of housing and community development in our city! The Housing & Community Development Survey is a chance for YOU to have a say in how future grant dollars are invested to support housing and community programs.

โœจ The survey is anonymous and takes just 5-10 minutes to complete.

The responses will help guide the development of the Housing and Community Development Plan (2026-2031), which will direct funding for critical programs like the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME), and Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG). These programs focus on improving housing, creating economic opportunities, and supporting low- and moderate-income residents and neighborhoods. At Disability Advocates, CDBG funding supports a portion of our Home Assessment work in the City which results in ramps and bathroom modifications being completed by our partner, Home Repair Services.

08/29/2025

The Michigan House of Representatives recently passed their version of the state budget that cuts funding for Centers for Independent Living (CILs) by 44%. The Senate version of the budget along with the budget originally proposed by the Governor recommend level funding for FY 2026. For Disability Advocates of Kent County, the cuts in the House version of the budget would drastically impact:

โ€ข Workforce Development- Helping Youth with disabilities gain skills for employment, independence and leadership and support for their families.

โ€ข Home Assessment Services โ€“ Assessing safety and independence in your home, and offering ramps, modifications, and other resources to keep you safe.

โ€ข Benefits Counseling โ€“ helping to navigate Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and work incentives.

โ€ข Independent Living Skills Training โ€“ learning to budget, cook, manage transportation, and live independently.

โ€ข Advocacy โ€“ helping to speak up for your rights and connecting your voice to local and state decision-makers.

If the House and the Senate cannot negotiate a compromise to keep our funding level (which really is a cut due to inflation), these services and others will be impacted for thousands of people with disabilities across West Michigan.

Why This Matters to the Whole Community
Disability Advocates of Kent County is also a trusted referral source for schools, hospitals, community agencies, and employers. A 44% state funding cut means less access for doctors, teachers, case managers, and occupational therapists to connect people to the independent living supports they need.

In short: when DAKC is weakened, the whole community loses.

What You Can Do
We are asking you โ€” our customers, families, and community partners โ€” to help protect DAKC and the services we all rely on:

โ€ข Contact your legislators. Tell them not to cut Centers for Independent Living. Ask them to restore level funding at the full $19.7 million amount as in the current yearโ€™s (FY 2025 budget). Click here to find your Senator: https://senate.michigan.gov/senators/all-senators/?mc_cid=3663f10be7&mc_eid=27eaaea6af.
Click here to find your Representative: https://house.mi.gov/AllRepresentatives?mc_cid=3663f10be7&mc_eid=27eaaea6af

โ€ข Share your story. If youโ€™ve benefited from DAKC services, tell your legislator how those services made a difference in your life.

โ€ข Spread the word. Share this post widely with friends, family, and others who believe in independence, inclusion, and equal access.

This may be about dollars โ€” but ultimately, itโ€™s about people. Itโ€™s about you, your neighbors, and our community having access to the tools and supports needed to live independently.

Thank you. Letโ€™s ensure advocacy and opportunity remain strong in West Michigan.

๐ŸŽ  Weโ€™re thrilled to share a sneak peek of the Grand Rapids Public Museum's game-changing accessibility upgrades to the iconic 1928 Spillman Carousel! For the first time in its 97-year history, the carousel will now be accessible to ALL, including wheelchair users.

๐ŸŒŸ Our Executive Director, Dave Bulkowski, was there to speak on how these upgrades are truly priceless for the community: "This will far exceed ADA requirements and provide a ride experience for families for generations to come." A full ramp, a custom chariot, and more means everyone can now enjoy this historic carousel together.
