Job Summary:
• Performs specified medical laboratory tasks, procedures and patient specimen collections under the supervision of the Laboratory Director or Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Duties:
• Reports to work on time and as scheduled. Is neat in appearance and always observing the dress code as established.
• Greets patients in a courteous manner, responds to patients with empathy and positive interpersonal skills.
• Always obtains correct patient identification by requesting the patient (or guardian/spouse) to state his/her full name and date of birth and comparing that with what is on the requisition/specimen label.
• Performs venipuncture techniques by using proper tube collection and correct order of draw. Is also able to use various methods such as vacutainer, syringe, and winged-collection set.
• Is able to explain and obtain urine drug screens, 24 hour urines, and stool tests. Also collects and performs manual testing. I.e., throat cultures, flu swabs, rapid strep screens, and HCG urines.
• Disposes of biohazard wastes routinely as necessary in the basement according to CLIA and OSHA regulations.
• Generates lab requisitions for Spectrum, Quest, and LabCorp when necessary. Is able to fill out necessary paperwork when needed for additional testing.
• Can operate and balance the centrifuge. Knows what tubes are required for various tests, what handling is necessary for each, and how to utilize various resources when it is not known.
• Responsible for keeping stock of all phlebotomy supplies, knowledge of expiration dates, and proper storage. Re-orders supplies when necessary.
• Shares appropriate communication with other laboratory and office personnel involving difficult venipuncture and timed specimens.
• Keeps the phlebotomy areas neat, clean and well stocked with supplies. Also helps stock surrounding areas for other laboratory personnel.
• Assists other laboratory personnel as workload permits.
• Prepares send-out specimens in a timely and efficient manner for the couriers.
• Consistently determines proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and is able to adjust schedule in view of patient load, timed collections, and manual testing.
• Refers to appropriate policy, procedure, and safety manuals when necessary and knows the location of such materials as well as the MSDS.
• Accepts responsibility for and becomes available to adjust hours when workload and/or other conditions warrant.
• Continuously works at establishing a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all staff.
• Must be able to move readily from one location to another. May require medium lifting – generally not more than 50 lbs. Maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
• Shows ability to handle unexpected situations and is able to exercise independent thought and actions when necessary.
• Preforms various clinical duties when workload permits. I.e., faxing lab results, calling patients, organizing lab forms, and collecting billing information for Quest Diagnostics.
• Adheres to CMS regulations by closing out old lab orders as workload permits.
• Checks email and work tasks daily. Sends and receives tasks to communicate with the providers and staff.
Qualifications
• 2 years of phlebotomy experience preferred
• Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required
