🧠 What Does Testing Look Like for Kids?

When we evaluate kids in our office, it’s not scary or overwhelming — it’s interactive, gentle, and designed to understand how their brain and body are working together.

Through specialized neurological testing, we’re able to identify areas that may be affecting focus, coordination, behavior, or sensory processing.

When we understand how a child’s nervous system is functioning, we can create a plan that truly supports them.

It’s Time for Our Tuesday Tip — Supporting Seasonal Allergies

If you struggle with seasonal allergies, you know how frustrating they can be — congestion, itchy eyes, sinus pressure, fatigue, and brain fog can make everyday life harder than it needs to be.

Allergies are a sign that the immune system is overreacting to something in the environment. While avoiding triggers is important, supporting the immune system’s balance is just as key.

This month, our Supplement of the Month is Aller-Pro — formulated to help support a healthy immune response and promote a more balanced reaction to seasonal stressors.

Tip: Supporting your body before and during allergy season can make a big difference. A proactive approach often works better than waiting until symptoms are at their worst.

If you have questions about allergy support or whether Aller-Pro may be right for you, drop them in the comments or send us a message for an upcoming Tuesday Tip.

Ever notice your child’s arm bend when they turn their head to the side? 👀

That could be the Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) — a primitive reflex that should integrate in infancy. When it sticks around, it can affect coordination, posture, handwriting, focus, and even sports performance.

In this video, you’ll see:
➡️ The reflex present
➡️ An activity highlighting the pattern
➡️ Dr. Kolby working to help integrate the reflex

When the brain and body communicate better, kids move better and thrive.

If you’ve noticed coordination struggles, clumsiness, or learning challenges, it may be worth a closer loo

It’s Time for Our Tuesday Tip — Toe Walking

Toe walking can be common in toddlers who are just learning to walk. But if it continues past the early developmental years, it may be a sign that something deeper is going on.

Consistent toe walking can be associated with:
• Tight calf muscles and reduced ankle mobility
• Balance and coordination challenges
• Sensory processing differences
• Retained primitive reflexes
• Underlying neurological patterns

Why it matters:
Walking primarily on the toes changes how the body absorbs force, affects posture, and can place extra stress on the feet, knees, hips, and lower back over time. It may also reflect how the brain and nervous system are organizing movement.

Tip: If your child (or even an older teen) consistently walks on their toes, it’s worth having it evaluated. Early support can help address the root cause rather than just the symptom.

Toe walking isn’t always “just a phase.” Paying attention early can make a big difference.

🧠✨ Infrared Sauna & Brain Health ✨🧠

Did you know heat therapy may do more than just help you relax?

Research on sauna use suggests potential brain benefits, including:

✔️ Increased blood flow to the brain (supporting oxygen and nutrient delivery)
✔️ Activation of heat shock proteins that help protect and repair cells
✔️ Support for neuroplasticity (your brain’s ability to adapt and grow)
✔️ Reduced inflammation — which plays a role in brain fog and cognitive fatigue
✔️ Nervous system regulation for better stress response and improved sleep

Long-term studies on regular sauna users have even shown associations with lower rates of cognitive decline.

While research is ongoing — especially with infrared specifically — the evidence around heat therapy and brain health is promising.

If you’re dealing with stress, brain fog, or just looking to support long-term wellness, infrared sauna may be a powerful addition to your routine.

Have questions? We’re happy to help you decide if it’s a good fit for you.

What You’re Seeing in This Video 👇

In the first clip, you’ll notice a pronounced startle reflex — an automatic response where the body reacts quickly and intensely to movement or sound.

While this reflex is normal in infants, it should integrate as the nervous system matures. When it remains present, it can contribute to:

• Sensory sensitivity
• Anxiety or overreacting to stimuli
• Difficulty focusing
• Coordination challenges
• Feeling constantly “on edge”

In this video, we first show the reflex present. Then you’ll see a specific neurological activity being performed. In the final clip, notice how the exaggerated startle response is no longer there.

That change isn’t random — it’s the nervous system responding to the right input.

In functional neurology, we assess retained primitive reflexes and use targeted, individualized exercises to help the brain integrate patterns that may be holding someone back.

If your child seems overly sensitive to noise, touch, or sudden movement — or struggles with focus and regulation — it may be worth evaluating their nervous system development.

Every brain develops at its own pace — sometimes it just needs the right guidance.

It’s Time for Our Tuesday Tip — The Cerebellum

The cerebellum is a small but powerful part of your brain located at the back of your head. While many people associate it only with balance, it plays a much bigger role.

The cerebellum helps coordinate:
• Physical balance and posture
• Smooth, controlled movement
• Eye movements
• Timing and coordination
• Mental processing and even aspects of focus and thought organization

When the cerebellum isn’t functioning optimally, it can show up as clumsiness, poor balance, motion sensitivity, brain fog, slowed processing, or difficulty coordinating movements.

Tip: If you’re experiencing ongoing balance issues, dizziness, or coordination challenges — physically or cognitively — it’s important to get it checked. Balance problems are not something to ignore, and they often give us important clues about how the brain is functioning.

The good news is that the brain is adaptable, and with the right evaluation and targeted support, improvement is possible.

It’s Time for Our Tuesday Tip — Vagal Nerve Stimulation

The vagus nerve plays a major role in regulating your nervous system. It helps control heart rate, digestion, inflammation, and your body’s stress response. When vagal tone is low, people may experience symptoms like anxiety, digestive issues, fatigue, or difficulty recovering from stress.

In our clinic, we may utilize devices such as VeRelief technology to support vagal nerve stimulation. These tools are designed to gently stimulate neurological pathways and encourage better regulation of the autonomic nervous system.

Why this matters:
When the vagus nerve is functioning well, the body can shift more efficiently out of “fight or flight” and into a calmer, more regulated state. This can support improved resilience, focus, digestion, and overall recovery.

Tip: If you feel stuck in stress mode or struggle with nervous system regulation, targeted vagal support may be worth exploring as part of a comprehensive plan.

Have questions about vagal nerve stimulation or whether it may be helpful for you? Drop them in the comments or send us a message for an upcoming Tuesday Tip.

Tuesday Tip — Understanding VHIT Testing

If you’ve been struggling with dizziness, balance problems, or lingering post-concussion symptoms, deeper testing may be an important next step.

One of the tools we use in our clinic is the VHIT (Video Head Impulse Test). This technology measures how well your inner ear and brain are working together during quick head movements. It helps us evaluate the vestibular system — the part of your nervous system responsible for balance, stability, and spatial awareness.

VHIT testing can be helpful for patients experiencing:
• Vertigo or dizziness
• Balance instability
• Motion sensitivity
• Post-concussion symptoms
• Unexplained nausea with movement

Tip: If your symptoms haven’t improved or you feel “off balance” without clear answers, advanced vestibular testing like VHIT can provide objective data and guide more precise, targeted treatment.

Understanding what the brain and inner ear are doing allows us to create a more individualized care plan.

Have questions about VHIT or whether it may be helpful for you? Drop a comment or send us a message for a future Tuesday Tip.

Tuesday Tip: Fueling Growing Brains

What kids eat directly impacts how they focus, regulate emotions, learn, and maintain steady energy throughout the day. Brain health starts in the kitchen.

A simple foundation for supporting a healthy brain:

• Protein – Helps support neurotransmitter production and sustained focus. Think eggs, chicken, beef, Greek yogurt, nuts, seeds, or beans.
• Healthy fats – The brain is largely made up of fat and needs quality sources like avocados, olive oil, nuts, seeds, and omega-3 rich foods.
• Fruits and vegetables – Provide antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber that support cognitive function and help reduce inflammation.

Tip: Build meals around protein and healthy fats first, then add colorful fruits and vegetables. This can help stabilize blood sugar and support better attention, mood, and overall brain performance.

Small, consistent nutrition choices can make a big difference for growing bodies and brains.

If you have questions about supporting your child’s brain health, drop them in the comments or send us a message.
