March represents colorectal cancer awareness month. Why is this important you ask? Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States! The 5-year survival rate is 91% when colorectal cancer is found at a localized stage, but drops to only 14% for distant-stage disease. Screening is now recommended starting at age 45 for average-risk adults, per the American Cancer Society, USPSTF, and NCCN guidelines. The important thing to know here is that more than half of all colorectal cancer cases and deaths are attributable to modifiable risk factors: smoking, unhealthy diet, high alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and excess body weight! There are numerous screening options available depending on your risk factors and is important to talk with your doctor about what option is best for you! Thrive Family Health will be partnering with Eric Krauss at Shield cancer screening for numerous events this month including Saturday, March 21st from 10a-4p at West Michigan Tide facility in Grand Rapids to provide onsite the only FDA-approved BLOOD DRAW for colon cancer screens to those 45-85 years of age with average risk of colorectal cancer! Come on out to spread awareness and to learn more about colon cancer prevention!

Meet Dr.John!
Dr. John was born and raised in Macomb, MI before completing his bachelor degree in Chemistry at Michigan State University (MSU), graduating at the top of his class with a cumulative 4.0 GPA. He then completed medical school at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) and residency training in family medicine at Trinity Health Muskegon. His clinical interests include preventive medicine, lifestyle optimization, musculoskeletal health, mental well-being, and faith-based wellness. He is board-certified in Family Medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT)—a hands-on approach that supports the body’s natural ability to heal. Patients describe Dr. John as approachable, genuine, and deeply empathetic. He takes time to listen, educate, and empower each person he serves—offering care that’s as relational as it is evidence-based. When not in the clinic, Dr. John enjoys spending time with his wife, exploring the outdoors, staying active, and cheering on his MSU Spartans. His life and practice are guided by his faith and a mission to love others through medicine.
