"I never took Fenet outside the house because I was afraid of what people might say when they saw her," Fenet's mom, Gelane, remembered.

Fenet was born with a condition called knock knees where her legs bend inwards, causing her knees to painfully "knock" into each other when she walked. For a lot of kids who have knocked knees at a very young age, they will grow out of them, but for Fenet, her knock knees just got worse as she got older.

Thankfully, Gelane had a chance (divinely arranged?) appointment with a doctor who knew about CURE Ethiopia. This doctor told Gelane not to waste any time and to bring Fenet to CURE!

Fenet received the surgeries she needed to straighten her legs, and Gelane now says, "My daughter used to stay inside all day. But now, she runs through the neighborhood with joy! I no longer keep her hidden—she is free. CURE's treatment and care have not only healed her legs but also removed the burden of shame from our lives!"

While talking with Pastor Victor, CURE Kenya's Spiritual Director, this young lady expressed wanting to know more about her faith. Thankfully, Pastor Victor had a Bible on hand that she could have as her very own!

Just like no child with a treatable disability should go untreated, no child who wants to know more about Jesus should be denied that opportunity!

Scoliosis isn't just a cosmetic condition - it can impact a child's breathing, mobility, and quality of life. Across Africa, where access to pediatric spinal surgery is scarce, many children suffer in silence. CURE is working to change that by expanding our services to include spinal surgical services in our Kijabe, Kenya, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia hospitals.

Moses was born with a cleft lip and lived with it for sixteen years. He and his mother, Evelyn, tried going to several hospitals, but none of them were able to help Moses.

"Eventually, after trying so hard, we gave up because no one seemed to want to treat Moses," remembers Evelyn.

Moses struggled to talk, and he ended up dropping out of school due to the constant bullying.

Thankfully, one of their neighbors received treatment at CURE Zambia and saw kids like Moses receiving sponsored surgeries! This neighbor passed on the good news, and Moses and Evelyn rushed to CURE Zambia, where he received reconstructive plastic surgery!

Now cleft lip free, Moses is figuring out what life is like when he's no longer defined by how his lip looks.

"He has recovered so well that everyone at home cannot recognize him!" Evelyn shared joyfully.

Please join us in praying for these two, that their smiles grow even bigger as they go through this process.

Complete transparency, there are more children with disabilities than we can physically treat. In a perfect world, a single CURE surgeon might be able to do about 500 surgeries in a year. And in a country like Ethiopia, which is Africa's second most populous country, there are more than 500 children born with treatable disabilities every year. The CURE surgeons are doing incredible work, but the need is greater than any one surgeon can meet.

BUT if this one CURE surgeon invests in the training of another surgeon, then together, they can conduct 1,000 operations a year. Then, if these two surgeons invest in training just one more each, we're up to 2,000 operations a year. Then, if these four surgeons invest in training one more, that's 4,000 surgeries a year!

With intentional training, the impact grows, and we have a real shot at not only keeping up with the need for pediatric surgery but even putting a permanent dent in it. And who knows, maybe one day, we can live in a world where no child suffering from a treatable disability goes without the surgery they need!

This is why training is an integral part of the work CURE does.

Here, CURE Ethiopia Surgical Fellow Dr. Ararso performs a clubfoot surgery.

Inaya showed up at CURE Niger after years of suffering from brittle bone disease. She had had so many micro-breaks in her legs that they had slowly deformed and bent. She couldn't walk, but moved around by scooting on her hands and knees.

Now, brittle bone disease isn't a curable disease, but the effects can be mitigated. The CURE Niger doctors were able to straighten Inaya's legs and reinforce her bones with metal rods, strengthening them and reducing the number of breaks she has to endure.

Today, Inaya can walk and go about her life with SO MUCH more confidence and joy!

CURE Ethiopia Counselor Teddy fist bumps CUREkid Sengten as she recovers from her surgery.

The physical transformation kids go through at CURE is just one aspect of the change happening in their lives. For many of these kids, their disability has been a part of their identity. So to have that suddenly disappear, there's this monumental task of essentially figuring out who they are all over again. It's tough and scary, but we're so glad to be able to provide counseling services to the kids and their families as they go through it!

In most (but not all) cases, the earlier a child is brought to CURE, the better/easier their disability can be corrected. At the CURE hospital in Uganda, we have babies that show up only a few days old! But here in this photo, baby Sarah is in CURE Malawi, and just got her feet casted to treat her clubfoot!

When treated as a baby, clubfoot can often be treated without any need for surgery!
