Prayer is a core part of what we do at CURE hospitals!

It's the idea that physical and spiritual healing have to intentionally be offered in tandem. As Christians, we believe our bodies have a finite lifespan, but our souls are eternal. So if we just offer physical ministry, we're just putting a band-aid on and ignoring eternal issues. But if we only minister to people and ignore the pain and physical problems these children are going through, then we're missing the core of the Gospel - of what Jesus did during his time here on Earth.

It's core to who CURE is that we intentionally meet people where they are to offer solutions to their physical problems while also loving and ministering to their eternal souls!

Hydrocephalus is the most common pediatric neurosurgical condition in sub-Saharan Africa. In Uganda, many families travel for days seeking care, often arriving in crisis. CURE Uganda welcomes them and provides expert neurosurgery and compassionate care, offering children not just survival, but a chance at a full life.

While the rest of the CURE hospitals are improving the quality of our patients' lives, CURE Uganda is literally saving lives!

“He was born with two straight legs, but each time he fell, his legs curved even more,” Sylvia remembers about her second-born son, Victor. Due to a lack of calcium, Victor’s bones were weak, and due to the stresses of a playful life, his legs began to warp and bend into his current predicament - windswept legs.

Life hasn’t been easy for Victor. “He can’t run or walk fast and also can’t walk long distances,” Sylvia shared. His windswept legs make it difficult for Victor to walk more than short distances, and they make it almost impossible for him to run.

Thankfully, one of Sylvia’s neighbors told her about CURE Zambia. “I feel so encouraged to be here. I have seen your amazing work,” Sylvia told us with a smile. Now, almost a year later, Victor's bones are strong and his legs are straight!

Mahammadou and his mom are all smiles after receiving his corrective clubfoot casts!

Ponsetti casting is a non-invasive treatment that can often correct clubfoot in babies without needing surgery. And in the cases where surgery is still needed, it often makes the surgeries less intense and much easier to recover from. While we are surgical hospitals, we always want to make sure the treatment we're offering is the best for the individual patient!

Washington was born with an underdeveloped right leg. For years, he searched for a treatment, but every doctor said the same thing - the only thing that could be done for him was to amputate the underdeveloped and non-functional part of his leg. Eventually, Washington agreed to the amputation at a nearby hospital. But after the surgery, Washington experienced delay after delay trying to get a prosthetic leg. He managed to get around with a crutch, but this wasn't the solution he had been sold on.

Thankfully, Washington's mom, Kabwe, heard about the new Prosthetics and Orthotics Workshop at CURE Zambia, and she brought Washington as a last resort. Washington now has a custom-made prosthetic leg, and after several physical therapy sessions to learn how to use his new leg, Washington is standing on his own two feet for the first time in his life!

One of the coolest things at CURE hospitals is how friendships are made and communities are formed. For a lot of these kids, they've been excluded and isolated because of their disabilities - because they look different or because they're differently abled. But at CURE, their disabilities are EXACTLY what they have in common with everyone else! It's a space where kids can just be kids. They can play. Laugh. And help each other through the healing process!

Ousseini was born with a condition called clubfoot, where his feet curved in on themselves. Walking on the sides of his feet proved extremely painful. His feet also slowed him down and left him struggling to keep up with the other kids. Slowly slowly he was left behind - physically, socially, and emotionally. It's rough to be left out, excluded, forgotten - especially as a young kid.

But a glimmer of hope entered Ousseini's and his family's lives when they learned about CURE Niger! In no time, he was admitted to the hospital, went through a series of preparatory castings, and then several surgeries. Now, only a few months later, Ousseini has straight feet, a big smile, and a future no longer defined by how his feet look!
