Grandville Pediatrics

Grandville Pediatrics Watch this site for updates and information about our practice. Follow us on Instagram! We believe that children are not little adults.

Grandville Pediatrics was founded in 2001 with the idea that a small independent practice could provide high-quality patient care for infants, children, and teenagers and more quickly implement the ideas of its physicians, nurse practitioners and support staff. Their treatment involves specialized pediatric knowledge and care, closer follow-up, a higher dedication to care of the entire patient and an increased level of provider and nurse involvement. We are committed to maintaining this standard. We believe that patients and parents deserve thorough explanations about growth and development as well as illnesses, behavioral/developmental issues, and their management. Our providers and staff will take the time to get to know you and your children and respond to your concerns. We have worked hard to maintain a personal atmosphere where you and your children feel comfortable and are remembered by name. We are also small enough that you will know all of us well. Feel free to ask any of our existing patients and families - we are very different from many large, traditional medical practices. The best part of our job is the relationships that we build with our patient families over time! Our office maintains close relationships with local pediatric specialists and is well respected by the staff of Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and local obstetricians. We look forward to meeting you and your family!

Positive, responsive, language-rich interactions during a child’s first years support healthy brain development that critically influences executive function and attention and leads to social and learning skills. One of the best interactions to support healthy brain development is reading aloud to your baby! Consider these tips when choosing books to read aloud to your baby.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world and babies are especially at risk for severe symptoms. Thankfully, the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and very effective at preventing it. The AAP and CDC recommend children receive the first dose of the MMR vaccine between 12 to 16 months of age. But what if your baby is too young to be vaccinated? How can you keep them safe from measles and should they be vaccinated early? We answer all your questions about babies, measles, and the MMR vaccine.

Here are some ways to embrace a particularly introverted, reserved, socially uncomfortable, or soft-spoken child for who they are — while encouraging them to learn the self-advocacy skills that they’ll need for life!

🌱 Show it’s OK to make social mistakes — tell them about times when you said the “wrong” thing and learned from it

🌱 Help them practice — role-play social situations, or use real-life opportunities like going over the menu together and ordering for themselves at a restaurant with your support

🌱 Avoid labeling them as “shy” — social skills can develop, just like any other tricky set of skills. Kids can internalize labels like “shy” and feel like it’s a part of who they are that can never change.

🌱 Provide extra time/space to practice or write down what they want to say

🌱 If they enjoy music, art, sports, etc. — use that as a jumping-off point for talking

🌱 Point out that they can tell friends/teachers/etc. what factors help them feel ready to communicate — being in smaller groups, walking while talking, asking Qs after class, taking extra time to think about a response, etc.

🌱 Also lean into non-speaking ways of advocating for themselves — writing effective emails, for example

Your baby is learning how to recognize words. The next time you are spending time with your baby, try this bonding activity to help them make new connections.

Activity: Just the Two of Us (0-2 years)

Use: Anytime, Anywhere

Description: In a calm moment together, take the time to look at your child's face. Point to their nose and say, "your nose." Then point to your nose and say, "my nose." Respond to what they do. Do they point too? Do they smile or repeat your words or sounds? Try this with different parts of your face.

Brainy Background: Children are more likely to learn when they're in a relaxed and supportive environment. As you help your child learn new words, you're also introducing them to the ideas of same and different. The ability to make these kinds of connections is at the heart of learning.

When you’re at odds with your kid, do things tend to escalate? When it comes to diffusing conflicts with kids, using the right phrases can make a big difference. Remember, the goal is not just to resolve the immediate conflict, but also to teach children important skills like empathy, problem-solving, and effective communication.

Using phrases like these can help create an environment where conflicts are seen as opportunities for growth and learning rather than sources of frustration or anger.

Please note: It is important to tailor your approach based on each child's age, temperament, and individual needs.

Phrases that keep the lines of communication open generally:
👉🏽 Validate the other person’s emotions
👉🏽 Acknowledge steps in the right direction
👉🏽 Show accountability for your part in the conflict
👉🏽 Demonstrate that you’re listening and you care
👉🏽 Seek to clear up misunderstandings
👉🏽 Avoid placing blame
