As both a nurse and mom of two young children, Melissa Cook knows the challenges of getting everyone to the doctor. "It feels like Navy Seal training to get them all ready and out of the house sometimes," she says.

That's why she turns to Beacon's online tools - including the MyBeacon patient portal - to handle everything from appointment scheduling to viewing test results, often while the kids are still asleep.

When Penn High School choir director Andrew’s colleagues suspected a stroke, he immediately went by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

“I got the right care at the right time thanks to Beacon,” he says.

A person’s outcome is impacted by how quickly a person gets to the hospital.

Memorial’s Advanced Certification as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center means we meet rigorous standards, set by The Joint Commission, for performing critical procedures and following specific performance measures.

We are celebrating another successful summer of our Mini Medical University program, an immersive, hands-on initiative that brought 41 students from 10 local high schools into South Bend's Memorial Hospital.

Guided by volunteer staff, including Mini Med alumni, students rotated through clinical departments including our NICU, Radiology, Music Therapy, MedFlight Operations, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, ICU, Emergency Department and Surgery.

Several participants this summer, including Olivia Cooper, a student at Career Academy South Bend, agreed the weeklong program affirmed their desire to work in health care.

"I didn't know there was music therapy or so many jobs in radiology. Now, I have an open mind and new ideas about what I want to do," Cooper said.

Thanks to the generosity of our philanthropic partners, especially the Physicians Philanthropy Council, Mini Medical University continues to shape the future of medicine here in our community. We're grateful to every associate, volunteer and donor who made this year's program possible.

Menopause is more than just the end of your period — it’s a whole-body transition that can impact your long-term health. As estrogen and progesterone levels drop, women may experience hot flashes, mood swings and sleep disturbances. But the changes go deeper than symptoms.

Lower hormone levels can increase your risk for:
• Heart disease
• Osteoporosis
• Dementia
• Skin changes

These shifts can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to face them alone. From hormone therapy to lifestyle changes, Beacon Medical Group Ireland Road Nurse Practitioner Shelby Patterson explains that women can work with their Beacon primary care provider to develop a plan that supports optimal health and well-being through this transition. At just 9 years old, Syl'viah Williams has survived more than most do in a lifetime. Found unresponsive one night, she was rushed to Beacon Children's Hospital, where the team discovered her blood sugar was over 1,200, more than 1,000 above normal.

The diagnosis: diabetes, completely unexpected for a family with no history of the disease. After falling into a coma for nearly four days and losing part of her leg to diabetic ketoacidosis, Syl'viah defied every odd with fierce resilience.

Today, she's looking forward to her prosthetic leg as she enters 4th grade, dreaming of becoming a basketball player and teacher, and inspiring others as she rounds the bases at the South Bend Cubs game for Home Run for Life. It's a special time to celebrate how far she's come and the unbreakable spirit that carried her there.

Dolan admits he was burning the candle at both ends in his job as a truck driver and at home. When cardioversion procedures and medication where not enough to stop his atrial fibrillation (AFib), pulse field ablation was performed to restore his natural heart rhythm.

“It’s like I’m my old self again,” he says. – Dolan, truck driver, AFib patient

Once aware of the condition, Dolan realized he probably had heart issues for as long as three years before seeking treatment.

Electrophysiology is used to restore the heart’s natural rhythm and may eliminate the need for certain medications.

Tammy Stockman has always loved being active, from hiking and kayaking to tending her garden. But sudden hip pain in December 2023 made even basic tasks difficult. The pain was so severe she developed a limp and couldn't reach past her knee.

After trying cortisone shots and physical therapy without success, Tammy met with Dr. Gregg Ebersole, orthopedic surgeon at Beacon Bone and Joint Specialists, in October 2024. He recommended an anterior hip replacement, a minimally invasive approach that avoids cutting major muscles and leads to faster recovery.

The transformation was remarkable. Four days after surgery, Tammy was working part-time from home, and at six weeks, she was doing most daily activities without a second thought. "Some mornings it didn't even dawn on me that I had had a procedure. I felt back to normal. It was like you waved a magic wand, and it was fabulous."
