Some people with diabetes may think that blurred vision is just a part of getting older- but they have no idea that their diabetes could be the cause.

As we mentioned in last week's post, we look for blood vessel changes during a diabetic eye exam. In a healthy eye, the blood vessels are strong and clear like the photo on the left, allowing light to focus properly on the retina for sharp vision. In an eye affected by diabetic retinopathy like the one on the right, those same vessels can leak or swell, leading to blurred vision, dark spots, or even permanent vision loss if left untreated.

Thanks to diabetes self management and regular follow-up care, patients are able to begin treatment right away—protecting their sight and preventing further damage!

Diabetes & Eye Health: It's more than just vision!

As part of our National Diabetes Awareness Month series, we're highlighting the importance of diabetic eye exams — because managing diabetes means protecting your vision, too.

During a comprehensive diabetic eye exam, we look at more than just how well you see. We check for:

👁️ Retinal health – to detect signs of diabetic retinopathy
👁️ Blood vessel changes – which can indicate damage or early complications
👁️ Blood pressure impact – high BP can worsen eye conditions, this is why we take your blood pressure during all of your visits.

Many eye complications from diabetes have no early symptoms, but early detection can protect your sight. Even if your vision seems fine, make your diabetic eye exam an annual habit.

Stressed? Your eyes might be too!

With the holiday season quickly approaching, you may find your stress levels increasing and this create physical symptoms in your eyes! Symptoms such as:

🔹Blurred vision
🔹Double vision
🔹Eye strain/stress
🔹Eyelid twitching and spasms
🔹Eye floaters
🔹Sensitivity to light
🔹Dry eyes
🔹Excessive tearing

Don't let stress get you down! Take a break. Breathe. Blink often. Your eyes will thank you😉
