Need help getting your kiddo (or even yourself!) to drink more water? Check out the tips below from Kids Eat in Color--they can make water so much more fun!

Kids typically get enough water between drinking water and foods that have moisture in them like fruits and veggies. You can also make water available during meals and snacks, as well as making it easy for them to access the rest of the day. It’s just like food - you make it available, and they choose whether or not to eat.

These ideas may add some fun and help you get your child drinking water.

If your child is experiencing constipation or dehydration these may help too, but it’s also important to check in with your child’s healthcare provider.
A little novelty can go a long way. You don’t have to have to spend money or get a huge selection of new cups and straws, I just wanted to show you options. Keep in mind that some of these things are choking hazards for the little ones, so only get things that are safe for your child. Additionally, always add a silicone straw tip to any metal straws for safety purposes.

If you ALWAYS do one kind of fun thing, it will lose its novelty very quickly. So, mix it up, and save the fun things for when you really need to help your child get more interested in water.

Happy National Home Visiting Week! 💙

This week, we’re proud to celebrate our Healthy Families Illinois program and the meaningful connections built every day with the families we serve. Through home visiting, our team provides support, education, and encouragement to parents and caregivers—helping them build strong foundations for their children’s growth and development.

From celebrating milestones to navigating challenges, we are honored to walk alongside families during some of life’s most important moments. A special thank you to our dedicated home visitors—Brittany, Chelsea, Dayjah, Kandyce, Sarah, Tamara, and Zaneli—for the compassion and care you bring every day, and to the families who trust us to be part of their journey.

Together, we’re strengthening families and building brighter futures—one visit at a time. 💫

🥛 Plant-Based Milks & Toddlers: What Parents Should Know

Plant-based milks like almond, oat, and soy have become popular for many reasons, including allergies, vegan diets, and health claims. But when it comes to toddlers, it’s important to make sure they’re getting the nutrients they need to grow and develop. 🌱

Toddlers ages 12–24 months need plenty of calories, protein, healthy fats, calcium, and vitamin D to support healthy growth. While Illinois WIC currently covers fortified soy milk, some parents may consider other plant-based milks for their toddler and wonder if they are the best choice.

What WIC recommends:

👶 Ages 1–2 years:
Plain pasteurized whole cow’s milk
✔ 16–24 ounces per day

🧒 Ages 2 years and older:
Plain pasteurized 1% or skim milk

What about other plant-based milks?
Almond, oat, and other plant-based milks should be limited or used only when medically necessary, and should not be the main drink for toddlers.

Good alternatives if lactose is a concern:
✔ Lactose-free milk
✔ Soy milk

These options are WIC-approved and provide the same key nutrients as cow’s milk, just without the lactose.

If you have questions about the best milk option for your child, give us a call! We are here to help! 💙
