🐾 Pet Food Myth Busters: Grain-Free Edition 🐾

❌ Myth: “Grain-free food is the healthiest choice for dogs and cats.”

✅ Truth: Grain-free doesn’t always mean healthier!

Many grain-free diets simply swap grains for other carbs like peas, lentils, or potatoes.

Dogs and cats can digest grains just fine, and for most pets, they aren’t harmful.

What matters most is balanced nutrition with the right protein, vitamins, and minerals for your pet’s age, size, and health.

⚠️ Some grain-free dog diets have even been linked to heart concerns (dilated cardiomyopathy), so it’s always best to check with your veterinarian before making food changes.

💡 Bottom line: Grain-free ≠ carb-free, and it’s not automatically better. The healthiest diet is the one that meets your pet’s specific needs. 🐶🐱❤️

🚨 Constipation? Not Always What It Seems! 🚨

For years we’ve heard many pet parents worry about constipation in their dogs and cats. But here’s the important truth:
• 🐶 Dogs that look constipated (straining to go) are most often dealing with diarrhea, not constipation.
• 🐱 Cats that look constipated may actually be suffering from a urinary blockage — and this can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

A blocked cat can’t urinate, and toxins build up quickly in their system. Without emergency care, this condition can become fatal within 24–48 hours.

👉 If your pet is straining in the litter box or outside, don’t wait — call us right away. What looks like constipation could be something much more serious.

❤️ Keeping your pets safe and healthy is our top priority!

Today we had to say goodbye to our sweet hospital cat, Marie. 💔

Most people never got the chance to meet her, because she preferred the peace and quiet of her cozy closet hideaway. But those of us who knew her were lucky enough to see her gentle spirit shine. When the hospital was still and calm, she would come out to greet us with purrs and snuggles, reminding us of the comfort that comes from simple companionship.

Marie was a quiet presence, but a very special one. She’ll be deeply missed by the staff who loved her and the space she made feel a little more like home.

Rest easy, Marie. 🐾❤️

🌽🐾 Corn pollen is in full swing—and so is allergy season for our pets! 🐾🌽

We’ve been seeing a lot of itchy, scratchy dogs lately, and if your pup can’t stop licking, chewing, or rubbing, pollen could be the culprit. Allergies don’t just make them uncomfortable—they can also lead to skin infections if left untreated.

The good news? We have lots of solutions to bring your dog relief, including:
✔️ Medications
✔️ Long-lasting injections like Cytopoint
✔️ Medicated shampoos & conditioners

If your dog is extra itchy right now, give us a call—we can help them feel better fast so they can get back to tail wags and playtime! 🐶💛

🕷️➡️🪰 Ticks are slowing down… but fleas are gearing up!

We’re seeing fewer ticks right now — but don’t let your guard down! Just as tick season starts to fade, fleas are picking up fast.

🐶 Fleas thrive in warm, humid weather
🐱 They multiply quickly and can infest your home before you even spot the first one
🚫 And once they’re in — they’re hard to get rid of

Now’s the time to stay ahead of the itch.
✅ Keep your pets on year-round prevention
✅ Ask us about flea treatments and combos that also protect against ticks, mites, and more

📞 Call or stop by Perkins County Veterinary Hospital — we’ll help you choose the right protection for your pet and your lifestyle.

📣 A Microchip Is Only As Good As the Info Attached to It 🐾

This week alone, we’ve received multiple calls from shelters and vet clinics trying to reunite lost dogs with their families — and sadly, the microchips weren’t registered.

👉 Some of these chips were placed right here at our hospital.
👉 Others came from breeders, already implanted but never linked to the new owner.
In every case, the pet had a chip... but no one to call. 💔

💡 Please take 5 minutes today to make sure your pet’s microchip is registered and up to date — with your name, current phone number, and address.

It’s easy. It’s fast. And it could be the difference between a happy reunion and a pet who never makes it back home.

✅ Not sure if your pet’s chip is registered? Give us a call — we’ll help you check.
🐶 Because when pets get lost, time matters — and an unregistered chip can’t speak for them.
