In August 2023, a family unhappy about their care at the birth center in 2022, launched a website and online attack devoted to slandering, harassing, and defaming the midwives involved in their care, and our extended families. We addressed some of the lies being shared and reshared on social media at that time. Last August, we faced another round of physical threats and online attacks from the same individuals, and saw slanderous falsehoods about our families circulated again.

This month, we faced the most frightening round of harassment that our team has faced from this family and their supporters to date. Our midwives have been physically threatened and terrorized when they return to their cars downtown, and their children and family members are being stalked. This stalking and harassment is having serious negative health impacts on some members of our team.

Our birth center owners and midwifery team have been cleared by every state agency, including the police, that has investigated the claims that have been levied against us online. Even after every authority affirmed that Rogue Birth Center provided safe, exceptional care in this situation as we do in all our care, this family has refused to find peace, and has chosen instead to try to punish us through terrorism. No healthcare provider should be afraid for their personal safety as a result of doing their job. We are so grateful for the overwhelming support and ask for unceasing prayers from our community as we continue our important work of helping families in Southern Oregon welcome their babies into the world.

We Were Always Here

Before they built the hospitals,
before they named the instruments
after men who never birthed,
before the papers and the policies
and the shiny white coats —
we were here.

In the forests,
by firelight,
in stone cottages and desert tents,
on dirt floors and riverbanks,
our hands caught the first breath
of every generation.

We anointed swollen bellies
with oil and prayer,
read the language of blood and bone,
sang to babies still hidden in the womb.
We knew the herbs, the seasons,
the omens in the sky.

We spoke in the dialect of women.
And when they called us witches,
when they came with fire and laws
and holy decrees,
we did not vanish.

We tended the sick in secret,
we delivered the next generation in the shadows,
we whispered the old names of the plants
to our daughters in the dark.

We have survived campaigns,
cholera, wars, crusades,
lynchings and lies.
They have burned our homes,
called us criminals,
tried to cleave us from the lineage we carry.
But we were always here.

And now — look.
We are rising again.
In cities, on reservations,
in basements and birth centers,
with hands as steady as the tide.
We have gathered the stories,
woven the wisdom back together,
refused to be forgotten.

We walk between worlds,
witnesses to first breath
and last.
Carriers of grief and glee,
keepers of the ancient fire.
Let them try again.

We are not afraid of darkness.
We were born from it.
And we —
we were always here.

After 25 years of birth work and 16 years on-call Rogue Midwife Amy Wessner CPM, LDM/PMH has made the decision to retire from midwifery. We are excited for her journey the next chapter of her career!
"Moving on from the Rogue Birth Center was not an easy decision to make!! I have been so blessed to work with all of our Rogue Birth Center families over the last eight years. You have all become my family and are all etched in my heart. It was an honor to serve over 1000 families as part of this amazing team. I have had the strong calling to transition into being an end of life Midwife. To me, it is the same, just energy moving the opposite direction. Traditional midwives helped with both “coming and going. When I was attending midwifery school, I did both and it felt truly balanced to me. I always imagined making this transition during my midwifery career. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and work beside you for the last eight years. These are the proudest years of my life and career. It was an honor to walk the path with each of you."
