Walk more, hurt less. That’s a simple way to avoid back pain this summer.

Chronic low back pain is one of the top reasons people lose mobility and need medical care. A new study shows that walking just a little more each day, to a total of about 100 minutes, can significantly lower the risk of long-term back pain. Research on over 11,000 middle-aged and older adults shows a few extra minutes walking every day cuts back pain up to 24%, and it doesn’t have to be fast. This is especially helpful for older adults in rural areas. Talk with your doctor before starting a new routine. A new peer-reviewed study finds strong evidence linking heavy alcohol consumption to severe, lasting brain damage. Researchers examined the brains of over 1,700 individuals and found that heavy and former heavy drinkers had 133% higher rates of small artery thickening, 8.9% lower brain mass, and 26.2% worse cognitive scores. Even moderate drinking was associated with signs of damage.

This study reinforces the urgent need to reconsider how alcohol affects long-term brain health. If you or someone you know drinks regularly, talk with a healthcare provider about safer choices and harm-reduction strategies. Prevention begins with understanding.
