⭐️Did you know that 33% of young adults who take prescription opioids are at higher risk of future opioid misuse and young adults who take opioids after oral surgery are 3 times more likely to become long-term users?
In an effort to combat the opioid crisis, many of us are turning to alternative methods in relieving post-operative pain. The use of EXPAREL during surgery can help avoid the potentially harmful side effects of narcotics which is why I use it in most of my cases.
⭐️How does it work?
EXPAREL works by numbing the area of your body where your surgery was performed, unlike opioids, which affect your whole body. EXPAREL keeps the surgical area numb for a few days after surgery. EXPAREL is not a narcotic medication. EXPAREL gives long-lasting pain control, meaning you may need fewer pain medications. As surgeons, we have a responsibility to educate and empower our patients to be advocates for their own health, and their child's, and speak with their doctors about the non-opioid options available to manage pain after surgery, including EXPAREL, a non-opioid pain management option. EXPAREL is a one-time injection into a surgical area in patients ≥6 years old to reduce pain after surgery and in adults as a shoulder nerve block to reduce pain in a specific part of the body. Safety and efficacy in other nerve blocks are not established. EXPAREL may cause a serious condition where too little oxygen is delivered to blood cells. Get immediate medical attention if you experience pale, gray, or blue-colored skin; headache; rapid heart rate; shortness of breath; lightheadedness; or fatigue. Temporary loss of sensation or motor activity that may last up to 5 days can occur. In adults, the most common side effects are nausea, fever, constipation, and vomiting. In children, the most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, constipation, low blood pressure, low number of red blood cells, muscle twitching, blurred vision, itching, and rapid heartbeat.
