Scams Are Getting Smarter — Let’s Look Out for One Another
We’ve been hearing about more scams in our area lately — phone calls, text messages, and even people showing up at the door pretending to be from a bank, Medicare, or a government office. These scammers are getting more convincing and often target seniors and vulnerable adults.
One of the most upsetting scams we’ve seen recently involves someone pretending to be a lawyer or police officer. They’ll say a loved one has been arrested and needs bond money immediately — and they count on panic to get people to act fast.
The Grapevine Police Department recently shared a great idea with us to help protect against things like this:
👉 Create a safe word with your loved one. If they ever get a call or message that doesn’t feel right, they can hang up, call you directly, and confirm the word before doing anything. It’s a simple way to make sure they’re really talking to someone they trust.
A few more quick reminders to help keep everyone safe:
-Don’t click links or reply to texts from unknown numbers.
-Legitimate banks, Medicare, and government agencies will never ask for personal or banking info over the phone.
-Don’t rush into decisions — scammers use pressure to make people act quickly.
-Talk about it often. The more we share these reminders, the harder it is for scammers to succeed.
If you’re ever unsure, hang up and call the company or agency directly using the number on your statement or card.
It’s always better to double-check than risk being caught in a scam.
