“Dr. Rene Choi is an exceptional ophthalmologist, distinguished by his unwavering integrity and outstanding kindness and compassion towards his patients. He combines superb clinical and surgical skills in treating retinal and inflammatory diseases with a genuinely warm demeanor. It has been some years since completing training, and he continues to be solidly regarded as one of the most effective and beloved fellows to have graduated from OHSU Casey Eye Institute.”

At AAO 2025, the American Academy of annual meeting held in Orlando, Florida, October 18-20, 2025, our own Dr. Rene Y. Choi was presented the “One to Watch” award, a peer-nominated honor given to upcoming doctors in the field of retina who are considered future leaders.

We’re excited to announce that on October 14, 2025, Texas Retina broke ground on a brand new, state-of-the-art eye care complex to better serve the Frisco, Texas community. Scheduled to open in late 2026, this new office will eventually replace our current Frisco office.

At twice the size, it will better serve our patients in this rapidly growing area while also incorporating space for clinical research and a dedicated ophthalmology ambulatory surgical center (ASC) available for retina surgeries as well as for general ophthalmology and a full range of ophthalmology subspecialty surgical procedures.

Prevent Blindness has declared October 20–26, 2025, as Inflammatory Eye Disease Awareness Week. While there are several inflammatory eye conditions, the one we specialize in at Texas Retina is called uveitis.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical to preserving vision and preventing complications of this rare, complex condition. There are only around 40 combined retina/uveitis specialists in the entire U.S., and at Texas Retina, we are fortunate to have two physicians who are fellowship-trained in both. Dr. Robert C. Wang and Dr. Rene Y. Choi sub-specialize in diagnosing and caring for patients with uveitis and are also on the forefront of investigating better treatments through clinical research.

At Texas Retina, we want our patients to feel comfortable about their care plan and work hard to earn their confidence and trust. A big part of that is taking the time to listen to any concerns and clearly communicating all treatment options and care provided. That is why we’re grateful for this positive feedback about Dr. Williams and his team.

He cares for patients in our Arlington, Fort Worth and Grapevine offices, and serves as our Director of Clinical Research for Fort Worth. You can learn more about Dr. Williams here: https://www.texasretina.com/our-physicians/patrick-d-williams-md

“This new trial will determine if neoadjuvant therapy with an oral agent called darovasertib, which is given before plaque radiation, will lead to less vision loss from plaque therapy. In addition, for patients with tumors too large for radiation, this therapy could possibly provide an option to maintain their eye rather than have it enucleated. Our hope is that darovasertib can shrink the tumor enough to allow for plaque treatment.” – Timothy Fuller, MD

Under the leadership of principal investigator Dr. Timothy Fuller, Texas Retina will soon begin enrolling patients in the OptimUM-10 clinical trial, a randomized, Phase III, open-label study of neoadjuvant darovasertib in subjects with primary non-metastatic uveal melanoma (neoadjuvant means therapy before definitive treatment like plaque placement or eye removal).

For many retinal diseases like age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and uveitis, an eye injection (also called an intravitreal injection) is the only way we can deliver potentially sight-saving medication where it is needed in the back of your eye.

In our latest blog, we share answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about eye injections that we hear from patients at Texas Retina: https://www.texasretina.com/2025/09/23/frequently-asked-questions-about-eye-injections

At Texas Retina, we know anything affecting your sight can be scary. That is why we take the time to truly listen to our patients’ concerns and clearly communicate all treatment options and care provided. It’s about treating our patients as we would our own families.

Today we’re grateful for this recent feedback about Dr. Timothy Fuller. He cares for patients in our Dallas Main and Athens offices. In addition to providing medical retina care, he also sub-specializes in treating ocular cancer.

On behalf of the VERONA study investigators, Texas Retina’s Dr. Ashkan Abbey delivered a presentation at the 58th Annual Scientific Meeting of The Retina Society held September 10-13, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois.

The Phase 2 VERONA clinical trial evaluated the durability, safety and efficacy of EYP-1901 in patients with active, previously treated diabetic macular (DME) compared to a control arm that received aflibercept. The aim of EYP-1901, a sustained release tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), is to reduce the frequency of treatments needed compared to current standard-of-care anti-VEGF intravitreal injections.
