Not all back pain is the same.

A herniated disc happens when the inner portion of a spinal disc pushes through its outer layer and may irritate nearby nerves. Understanding the pathology behind the pain is what helps medical massage therapists determine how to treat it safely — or when not to treat it at all.

Protocols are helpful… but clinical reasoning is ESSENTIAL.

Knowing what structure is involved, why symptoms occur, and how the body compensates allows us to move beyond routine massage and provide intentional, corrective care.

This is why pathology education matters as medical massage practitioners.
