AnnaLisa Banegas-Peña has been living with Parkinson's disease for many years. In order to help improve her motor function, she started LSVT BIG, a Parkinson's treatment program, with Occupational Therapist Bethany Warner.

As a longtime educator and lifelong learner, AnnaLisa focused on what Bethany did and the why behind each movement. This really helped her learn each movement and become confident in what she was doing.

"Bethany held me to an elevated level of expectations in line with my condition and helped me to either meet or exceed my goals," AnnaLisa said.

With Bethany's patience, AnnaLisa could practice movements slowly and intentionally. They connected the movements to real life so quickly that what was practiced in the center carried over to swinging a club on the golf course. An action that allowed AnnaLisa to hit a hole in one!

No one wants to hear the words, "you have cancer."

Tracy Fronko was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024 and was quickly facing a world of fear and uncertainty. She had to schedule appointments, learn about different doctors, attend consultations and plan for treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, medications and physical therapy. All of this became her new, overwhelming reality. On top of that, she also had to deal with the side effects of these treatments.

Tracy’s side effects led her to see Megan Storm, ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Program Director and a physical therapist. Tracy had first heard Megan speak at a Project 31 meeting, a breast cancer support group, at Mercy on Memorial. Megan explained how cancer treatments can worsen pelvic floor issues.

“So, I called and got a referral from my surgeon,” she shared. “Made my appointment.”

Megan worked with Tracy to help her return to the activities she loved, while making sure she felt respected and supported. At 63, Tracy had finished half and full marathons, completed triathlons and enjoyed adventures like parasailing, biking and skiing. She wanted to keep living an active life, including helping her neighbors by pulling weeds and walking their dogs. Megan designed a program for Tracy focused on building core and hip strength.

“I love trying any new adventure I can," she stated. “However, my pelvic floor issues limited my ability.”

Thankfully, the plan not only met but exceeded Tracy’s expectations. Being able to do jumping jacks again was a big moment for her. She continues to celebrate small victories and works on her exercises every day. She states she’s feeling great and is looking forward to getting back to everything.

Growing up playing sports and continuing to stay active by working out and golfing, Brenden Stewart's knees were seemingly always on the run. Ultimately, he needed surgery that would require him to take a step back from those activities.

Three weeks after surgery, Brenden began attending physical therapy sessions with Rebecca "Becca" Seale, a physical therapist. He could barely bend his leg and was in a lot of pain. However, since he had undergone the same surgery on his other leg back in high school, he knew what to expect.

The first step was bending his leg again. While it seems simple, Brenden's leg had been locked in the same position for over a month. That small motion was also the reminder he needed that healing was happening.

From there, the next step was to get rid of crutches and then his brace.

"Those things became part of my daily life, so finally setting them aside felt like freedom," Brenden shared. "From there, I started to feel my leg slowly come back to life."

After regaining more mobility, he worked toward regaining strength, balance and confidence. His workouts are now back to the same intensity that they were pre-surgery. Brenden is still working on being able to run again, but he is on track to complete his goal, a 5K in November.

"Working with Becca has been a huge part of that process," Brenden said his recovery. "Her understanding, encouragement and expertise have made all the difference."

Harold Rosen enjoys watching football, investing in the stock market and playing with his dog, Ruby. Unfortunately, the flu hit hard last Christmas. It led to respiratory issues that landed him in and out of the hospital. Eventually, he lost strength, especially in his legs and back. He couldn't stand or walk and needed a mechanical lift to get into bed. And he certainly couldn't walk Ruby.

That's when Harold came to work with Physical Therapists Michelle Byrd and Madeline Devereux. He worked hard and made progress. Harold recently took his first steps since being hospitalized.

"Michelle and Madeline have inspired me to push harder to reach my goals," he said. "I'm feeling better and stronger. [I'm] looking forward to being able to go out for walks with my dog."

As summer activities pick up, so does the temperature. That's why it's essential to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a heat cramp.

These muscle spasms typically occur after excessive exercise in hot environments. They can be longer and more painful than regular cramps.

Prevention starts by remaining hydrated while exercising. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and limit vigorous activity outdoors on extremely hot days.

If experiencing pain that may be heat cramps, take these steps:

- Rest and cool down
- Drink clear juice or a sports drink with electrolytes
- Perform gentle stretching or massage to relieve pain

Call a doctor if cramps last longer than an hour.

Do not resume strenuous activities for several hours after the cramps have dissipated.

Knowing your limits will help keep summer fun and pain-free.

Summer create the perfect conditions for insects and the diseases they can carry. To help you and your loved stay safe, check out these tips.

Wear repellant outside to help avoid stings and bites.

Long pants and long-sleeved shirts can work as a great barrier from ticks and mosquito bites.

Avoid standing water in your yard, as mosquitos like to lay eggs there.

Check your skin and hair for ticks after you've been in the woods. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme and Anaplasmosis, both of which can have deadly consequences if left untreated.

If you do encounter any insect and appear to have an allergic reaction, seek treatment. Symptoms can include hives, nausea, fever or trouble breathing.

Have a safe and insect-free summer!

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Roughly 9,500 people are diagnosed every day according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer before age 70, and most skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun.

Ultraviolet lights cause damage to the DNA in skin cells. This can occur from tanning devices as well, which have been known to produce UV radiation in amounts higher than the sun.

Get out there and enjoy the weather, but be sure to always wear sunscreen!
