2 1/2 weeks ago my 5 year old so was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Our world has been flipped upside down & suddenly everything else doesn’t seem as important. I’m canceling all classes and appointments going forward. I’m hoping to get back to it in the future but for now my priority is at home. Thank you all for your ongoing support 💙

Myth Buster Monday!

Did you know your due date is calculated based on a 28 day menstrual cycle? If there is greater than 28 days between your cycles then your due date could be greater than 40 weeks! 🗓️

& just because your due date was calculated based on an ultrasound doesn’t necessarily make it more accurate! Ultrasounds in the first trimester of pregnancy can be off +/- 5 day, +/- 8 days in the second trimester, & +/- 10 days in the third trimester! 🤰🏻

Post dates is defined as over 42 weeks gestation. So before you schedule that induction think twice rather your baby is truly ready to be born! 👶🏼

I often get asked, “When is the best time to take a prenatal childbirth & breastfeeding class?”

& I would say that answer will vary depending on what kind of class you’re taking & who you’re taking it with! Are you wanting to take a 6 week course? Are you wanting to be in a group of other expecting parents? Is the course covering childbirth & breastfeeding? Will you have to travel to get there?

I recommend taking our childbirth & breastfeeding class in your last trimester of pregnancy between 32-36 weeks!

Here’s why! ⬇️

🌼 It’s a one day class, lasting 3.5-4 hours
🌼 It takes place in the comfort of your home
🌼 It’s a private class with just mom & her support person/people
🌼 I want parents to remember what was talked about & what techniques were used during the class so they can use them during their birth & breastfeeding experiences!

Have questions about taking a prenatal childbirth & breastfeeding class? I’d love to chat!

Myth Busters Monday!!

Did you know NOT giving birth on your back was an option? Women giving birth on their back is most commonly heard of but did you know any position you can labor in, you can also give birth in? Usually, in less time & with fewer complications.

Some positions you can give birth in include:

🌸Hands & Knees
🌸Squating
🌸Side lying
🌸Kneeling
🌸Standing
🌸Using a birthing seat
🌸Using a bar

So why do most women give birth lying on their back?

🚫Convenience for healthcare workers
🚫Easier for fetal monitoring
🚫Myths about protecting the perineum
🚫Use of an epidural

SPEAK UP! If you’re pushing on your back & it’s uncomfortable or you don’t feel like you’re pushing is effective tell your healthcare provider it’s time to try a new position! Remember, this is your birth story & you’re in charge of it! 🤰🏻🤱🏼👶🏽

What position did you give birth in? ⬇️

Let’s talk 💩

Just because something is common, does not mean it is normal.

Before 6 weeks breastfed babies should be pooping 3-4x a day & after 6 weeks at least once a day. Pooping is the bodies way of getting rid of anything the body does not need or want. So, if baby isn’t pooping where does the waste go? It just sits in the GI tract. OUCH!

There could be many reasons your baby is having infrequent stools but “it’s common” is not a good enough answer.

This weeks Monday Myth Busters involves infant eating!

Did you know baby led weaning teaches your baby to chew before they swallow compared to purée foods that promote swallowing first & increase your baby’s risk of choking when they move to solids later?!

Baby led weaning also puts your baby in charge of mealtime. It allows them to self regulate how much they eat and prevents overeating!

What questions do you have about baby led weaning? 👶🏽

The benefits of breastfeeding do not end when your baby turns one!

Both the American Academy of Pediatrics & the World Health Organization recommend breastfeeding until the age of 2 because of the benefits for both mom & baby. It is biologically normal for your baby to breastfeed into toddlerhood!

How long did you breastfeed for? 🤱🏽

Starting a new series this year called Monday Myth Busters! There are so many myths out there revolving around childbirth, breastfeeding, & newborn care. I’m here to give you the facts! 🤰🏽

Lactogenesis I is the beginning of milk production & happens around 16 weeks gestation. This is hormone driven, not supply and demand, so it will be there regardless of your feeding plans. This milk is called colostrum! 🤱🏼

When baby is born their stomach is about the size of a marble & holds about 5-7mL at a time. This is the perfect size for your colostrum! 👶🏻

I did a really poor job in 2023 of keeping track of all the mamas I talked to & spent time with to help them reach their birth & breastfeeding goals! 🤰🏼🤱🏽 But, here are the basics…

From June to December I did 20 Lactation Consults, taught 3 Prenatal Childbirth & Breastfeeding classes, & gained 386 followers on social media.

Fun fact: All 3 of the Prenatal Childbirth & Breastfeeding classes I taught were for Registered Nurses & their spouses!

Another fact: The #1 reason for these lactation consults was perceived low milk supply!

It was such an honor meeting & working with so many mamas this past year. You all should be so proud of yourselves! It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it! 💕

P.S. I plan on doing a better job keeping track of statistics in 2024! 😉

This needs to be talked about more often. Your pediatrician, OBGYN, or family doctor may have had 15 minutes of lactation education in medical school. IBCLC’s have 95 hours of lactation specific education and up to 1,000 hours of clinical experience before they can sit to take their certification exam to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). There is a reason there are specialists. Everyone has their own area of knowledge and breastfeeding should be left to IBCLC’s. When healthcare providers work together as a team by referring their patients to the appropriate provider it leads to the best outcomes for their patients. Seeing a doctor for breastfeeding makes as much sense as seeing a cardiologist for your mental health. If you have a breastfeeding problem or need support please contact an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). We specialize in the clinical management of breastfeeding. 🤱🏼💕

As we quickly approach the holidays remember, “Pass the gravy, not the baby!”

A great way to politely decline your baby being passed around during the holidays is to wear your baby! Removing your baby from their car seat & placing your baby in a baby wrap or baby carrier BEFORE entering a Christmas party makes it easy to say “no” when people ask to hold your baby.

“My baby is actually really comfortable right now”
“Sorry, my baby is sleeping”
Or just very simply, “no, it’s cold & flu season & I prefer to wear my baby to help prevent illness”

Your baby is YOURS. & it’s okay to say “no”.
